COC Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Barbados Olympic Association
Canada and Barbados have pledged a co-operation in sport after officials from the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 29.
Chris Rudge, CEO and Secretary General of the COC, met with BOA President Steve Stoute and Secretary General Erskine Simmons to sign the document, which provides a framework for strengthening the sports relationship between Canada and Barbados as well as cooperation in the fields of physical fitness and development of excellence in sports.
“The Canadian Olympic Committee and the Barbados Olympic Association have historically had close ties,” said COC President Michael Chambers. “Signing this Memorandum of Understanding helps us work even more closely with our colleagues in Barbados to improve sport development for both Barbadian and Canadian athletes and coaches.”
In the Memorandum of Understanding, both national Olympic committees pledge to develop stronger partnerships between sport federations of Canada and Barbados with athlete development an area of focus. This includes the free exchange of coaches, officials, trainers, judges, experts and scientists for participation in seminars, courses and counselling.
“This agreement helps spur initiatives with our friends in Barbados and will benefit the development of sport in the Pan American region now and well into the future,” Rudge said.
The friendly relationship seeks to promote an understanding between citizens of Canada and Barbados while supporting Olympic values such as fair play, anti-doping and multiculturalism. The COC and BOA will also share information and knowledge in regards to Olympic marketing and legal issues that arise in the area of sport.
