Canadians Fire Four Fourth-Place Results on Day 10

Canadians came oh-so-close to the podium on a number of fronts Monday in hot, humid weather. The Canadian Youth Olympic Team now looks to the future as the inaugural event enters its final days of competition.

Basketball: Canada fell 34-16 to the powerful American squad in the bronze medal match. Despite the finish, the team was proud of their run, which included five straight wins to open the tournament. “I think the team improved as the tournament went on,” said Tiye Traore (Sudbury, Ont.) “I think we’ve proven that Canada is right up there in the world for basketball, at least in this age group,” said Kaylee Kilpatrick (Saint John, N.B.).

Shooting: Danielle Marcotte (Pelly Crossing, Yukon) came up big in the 10 m air pistol competition, earning fourth place. “I was really nervous going in. The nerves hit me a little on my first shot, but then I pulled through and it was really fun.” Marcotte is the only athlete from the Canadian territories on the team and the only shooting athlete. “I didn’t really think about that. I guess I didn’t really need any more stress.”

Athletics: Brittany Lewis (Sarnia, Ont.) topped her personal best, finishing the 400-metre hurdles final in a time of 59.86 seconds, good for fourth place. “I feel really good about my race. It was a lot smoother than my last run, but it got a little hard there at the end. The whole experience has been amazing. It feels so big and so real—like a real Olympics. Teammate Katelyn Hayward (Victoria) came fourth in the B final of the 2,000 m steeplechase.

Diving: Pamela Ware (Otterburn Park, Que.) came two points shy of a bronze medal at the 3 m springboard competition. “I was feeling good going into the final round,” she said. “I had a lot of energy. My first dive wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, but my other three dives were really strong. I’m proud of my performance tonight.”
