Weglarz Among Indians Top Prospects
Nick Weglarz (Stevensville, ON) was named the fifth best prospect in the Cleveland Indians organization by Baseball America. Baseball America annually ranks the top ten prospects of each major league team.
The soon-to-be 23 year-old (Dec. 16) spent the past season at both Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus and hit a combined .285 with 13 homeruns and 47 RBIs. Noted for his keen eye and excellent sense of the strike zone, Weglarz carried an impressive .390 on-base percentage combined with both clubs.
A third round pick of the Indians in 2005, Weglarz had his season cut short at the end of July when he suffered a sprained right thumb.
The Olympian (Beijing 2008) and World Baseball Classic (2009) participant is currently playing in the Venezuelan Winter League with the Caracas Leones. Through twelve at-bats, Weglarz has 3 hits and 2 RBIs.
In the Baseball America report, Weglarz is noted for being a “very patient hitter with outstanding pitch recognition.” The report also goes on to say that his big league debut could happen as early as 2011.
Weglarz will report to the Indians major league camp for spring training, with his eye on a job in the big leagues.
