Sport Shorts: Gearing up for Fall
Row for the Podium: The 2011 World Rowing Championships are underway in Bled, Slovenia and Canada is moving on. Eight Canadian boats moved on to the semi-finals. Five Canadian boats won their heats outright, while two others moved on with second-place finishes. The men’s and women’s eight won their heats to advance, as did Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee, (both of Victoria, B.C.) in the lightweight women’s event, Olympic silver medallists David Calder (Victoria, B.C.) and Scott Frandsen (Kelowna, B.C.) in the men’s pairs and Doug Vandor (Dewittville, Que.) and Cam Sylvester (Caledon, Ont.) in the lightweight men’s double. Three more boats finished second in their respective heats, earning a ticket to the semi-finals: Carolyn Ganes (Saskatoon, Sask) and Larissa Lagzdins (Burlington, Ont.) in the women’s pair, Tracy Cameron (Shubenacadie, N.S.) in the women’s single as well as Morgan Jarvis (Winnipeg) and Tim Myers (Penticton, B.C.) in the lightweight men’s pair. Canada’s Canoe/Kayak Kings and Queens: 2011 world champions Adam van Koeverden (Oakville, Ont.) and Laurence Vincent-Lapointe (Trois-Rivieres, Que.) were just as successful on Canadian water as they were at the World Championships, earning 2011 Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak championships. Van Koeverden, took gold in the K-1 1,000 metres and teamed up with Chris Pellini (Oakville) to win the K-2 1,000. Vincent-Lapointe, won the women’s C-1 500 and 1,000 metres at the senior level, and also won the junior C-1 200. Check out the full results here.
Slopestyle Pioneers: The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association named its first Ski Slopestyle National Team. The A Team will consist of Kaya Turski (Montreal, Que.), Kim Lamarre (Lac Beauport, Que.), J.F. Houle (Drummondville, Que.), T.J. Schiller (Vernon, BC) and Alexis Godbout (Mont-Tremblant, Que.). The discipline made its FIS World Championships debut this winter in Park City, USA where Turski took home the silver medal. The sport will make its Olympic debut in Sochi at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
World Championship Season: With fall right around the corner, several summer sports are ending their season with their biggest meets yet: World Championships. The IAAF World Athletics Championships are going on right now in Daegu, KOR, while the UCI World Mountain Bike Championships just started in Champery, SUI.
