Wimbledon courts good to Canadians

TENNIS
Canadians showed dominance at Wimbledon Monday as Milos Raonic downed Tatsuma Ito (6-3, 6-4) in first-round Tennis action after rain postponed their match Sunday. On the women’s side, Aleksandra Wozniak overtook Marina Erakovic (6-1, 6-2) and moves on to the second-round. In doubles play, Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil defeated Horia Tecau and Adrian Ungur of Romania (6-3, 7-6(9)) to move on.

BASKETBALL
The Canadian women’s basketball team improved to 1-1 with a 73-65 win over host Great Britain.

SWIMMING
Barbara Jardin swam to a 1:57.91 to finish 10th in the 200m freestyle semifinal, while her teammate Samantha Cheverton clocked at 1:57.98 for 11th spot.

JUDO
Canadians Joliane Melançon and Nicholas Tritton were knocked out in the first round of Judo action at ExCel. “I am so disappointed,” said Tritton. “You train so hard to win a medal for your country and make your friends and family proud. I wanted a different result but this is the law of sport.” Melançon said her fight started well, but was surprised late. “I am obviously disappointed,” she said. “I’ll take this opportunity to watch the other combats and cheer on my teammates.”

ARCHERY
Scarborough, ON’s Crispin Duenas lost his first elimination match Monday in Archery action after earning an eighth-place seed in ranking rounds. “I don’t know what happened. My shots felt good. I just guess the winds just weren’t in my favour,” said Duenas.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Beach Volleyball duo Josh Binstock and Martin Reader are now 1-1 after dropping their match Monday to Norway. They will play again Wednesday against Brazil. “We were not up to calibre today,” said Reader.

FENCING
After getting a bye in the first round, 37-year-old Sherraine Schalm lost in the second round of the women’s individual Épée event to Lin A Shin from the Republic of Korea with a score of 12-15. Schalm’s coach Michel Dessureault said her appearance at the Games was impressive, considering her training regimen after having a child just 16 months ago. “The disappointment for her was difficult because we expected more,” said Dessureault. “But to get here all ready was a great task.

SHOOTING
Cory Niefer did not advance through qualification rounds in 10m Air Rifle, finishing in 46th with 581 points.

EQUESTRIAN
After the cross-country portion of Equestrian Eventing action, Canada sits in 12th spot. It was a tough day for rider Hawley Bennett-Awad, who was thrown from her horse Monday during competition and taken to hospital. She remains in stable condition.
