Maple Leaf Moments: Going for Gold Again

Going for gold again: On the ninth day of competition at Vancouver 2010 long track speed skater Kristina Groves (Calgary, AB) won silver in the ladies’ 1500m for the second straight Games. At Sochi 2014, watch for 2010 Olympic champion Christine Nesbitt (London, ON) to take a run at the podium in this event.

On this day: Long track speed skater Gaétan Boucher (Charlesbourg, QC) wins gold in the 1500m in Sarajevo in1984, just two days after being crowned the 1000m Olympic champion. No Canadian has reached the podium in either event since then.  As a two-time world champion in the 1500m, Denny Morrison (Fort St. John, BC) has the best chance of ending the drought.

Exactly 10 years later, Jean-Luc Brassard (Grand Ile, QC) wins gold in the men’s moguls in Lillehammer for Canada‘s first-ever Olympic gold in Freestyle Skiing. Brassard’s accomplishment in this event would be matched by Rosemere, QC’s Alexandre Bilodeau at Vancouver 2010.
