Serwa Soars in Sochi

SOCHI, RUS – Canada owned the podium at the ski cross Olympic  test event in Sochi, Russia, on Tuesday, winning one gold and two silvers as Kelsey Serwa and Marielle Thompson finished 1-2 in the women’s final and Chris Del Bosco capped a remarkable comeback from injury with second place in the men’s final.

Reigning ski cross world champion Serwa, of Kelowna, B.C., dominated her early heats to move into the women’s final, where she held off World Cup leader Fanny Smith, of Switzerland, to take the win. Marielle Thompson, of Whistler, B.C., seemed to gain confidence with each heat and when Smith fell in the final she moved through to finish second.

Del Bosco, of Montreal, Que., returned from a shoulder injury and showed no signs of rust as he advanced to the men’s final, where he lost a tight battle for gold at the line. Meanwhile, Tristan Tafel, of Canmore, Alta., won the small final to finish fifth overall.
