Maple Leaf Moments: All Class for Klassen

Cindy Klassen (Winnipeg, MB) proved she was indeed all class at the oval in Turin on this day in 2006. The Canadian and Speed Skating icon, along with the legendary Clara Hughes (Winnipeg, MB), blasted to gold and bronze, respectively, in the 5000m at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin.   It marked Klassen’s fifth medal of those Games, the most ever won by a Canadian at a single Games.  The Maple Leaf moment also tied her with American Eric Heiden for the most medals won by a long track speed skater at a single Games.

Combined with her bronze medal from Salt Lake City 2002, Klassen’s six career medals make her Canada’s most decorated Olympian of all time.

Vancouver Lookback:  It was also on this day in 2010 when Canada’s short track men’s team skated to four gold medals: http://bit.ly/XndMMs.
