Benfeito beats top Chinese diver for World Series gold

Canadian divers ended the FINA World Series circuit in Mexico over the weekend winning four medals, including a head-turning gold for Meaghan Benfeito in the 10-metre platform.

Benfeito beat Chinese diver Liu Huixia, who won the overall World Series title in the 10m events. Benfeito finished fourth in the standings behind national teammate Roseline Filion (who finished fourth in Mexico).

Chinese divers have dominated the 10m platform this year, winning 28 events. Paola Espinosa of Mexico won three aside from Benfeito’s lone triumph.

In synchro events, London 2012 bronze medallists Benfeito and Filion won bronze in the 10m platform, as did Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware in the 3m springboard.

Abel also won an individual bronze medal in the 3m springboard.

Canadian divers will now prepare for the FINA World Cup in Shanghai next month.
