Mark de Jonge wins World title, sets record
Olympic canoe/kayak sprint bronze medallist Mark de Jonge reached new heights in his marquee event – the K-1 200 m – winning gold and setting a record at the World Championships.
The Canadian won bronze at the event’s London 2012 Olympic debut. The following year de Jonge took World Championship silver at Duisburg and on Sunday, he became the best on the planet, setting an official world record of 33.961 seconds along the way.

Although de Jonge had a faster time in the semifinal, “only times in the final count toward the record books” according to a CanoeKayak Canada release.
It was the only Canadian medal in an Olympic event won at 2014 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Moscow.
In non-Olympic events Laurence Vincent-Lapointe won the women’s C-1 200 m race. She is an eight-time world champion.
