Thompson doubles the gold at Val Thorens
Olympic ski cross champion Marielle Thompson continued to dominate her sport with back-to-back World Cup victories this weekend.
The ski cross tour hit Val Thorens, France for two races on Friday and Saturday, in which Thompson won gold both times, but that was far from Canada’s only success story.
After Friday’s race, Thompson was joined on the podium by fellow Alpine Canada skier Georgia Simmerling, who took the silver medal in a very tight finish for the second straight 1-2 World Cup result for the duo. They previously achieved the feat in Nakiska, Alberta last month. Alizee Baron of France took the bronze medal.
Thompson doubled her Val Thorens gold medal collection for the weekend on Saturday, skiing ahead of Anna Holmund of Sweden and French skier Ophelie David to the podium.
On the men’s side Brady Leman got in on the celebrations with a bronze medal on Saturday by outduelling Armin Niederer of Switzerland in a battle of outstretched arms at the finish line. Leman’s crossed first. Marc Bischofberger (Switzerland) and Jonathan Midol (France) took the gold and silver medals respectively.
Thompson, the defending World Cup overall title-holder, leads the season standings with her three wins, while Simmerling is second in the women’s leaderboard. Leman sits eighth overall in the men’s table.
