Badminton Canada names its Pan Am Games team

Badminton Canada has named the eight athletes who will represent the country at its home Pan Am Games this summer in Toronto.

Double Pan Am gold medallist and Olympian, Michelle Li, is the biggest name in Canadian badminton. The world number 16 will return to defend her singles Pan Am title won at Guadalajara 2011 four years ago, along with the doubles gold she won with teammate Alex Bruce, who also returns for Toronto 2015.

The other two women who make up Team Canada are Phyllis Chan and Rachel Honderich.

Brothers Toby and Derrick Ng make up half the men’s side, along with Adrian Liu and men’s singles national champion Andrew D’Souza.

Reached in China where the team is currently competing in the Badminton World Federation’s Sudirman Cup, Li called the Canadian team at Pan Am a “powerhouse” and homes that “Canada can dominate for the home team fans.”

The older Ng brother, Toby, said that “fans can expect to see a new perspective and image to the sport of badminton” during TO2015.

Badminton competition will take place at the Markham Pan Am Centre from July 11-16 (Tickets).
