Day 2 Recap: Canada first in gold and total medals

The medal haul continued on Day 2, with Team Canada adding 16 more to their collection. They have won the most gold medals (10) and most total medals (24).

Canada’s mountain bikers were on point Sunday, taking both gold medals up for grabs. Emily Batty and Catharine Pendrel made it a 1-2 finish for Canada in the women’s cross-country. In the men’s event, Raphaël Gagné rode his way to gold.

The rugby sevens teams also had a massive day, with the women defeating the USA 55-7 in the final, and the men following suit with a huge comeback to win gold.

Also reaching the podium on Sunday were Jennifer Abel (diving gold), Lynda Kiejko (shooting gold), Pamela Ware (diving silver), the equestrian dressage team (silver), the women’s artistic gymnastics team (silver), Antoine Bouchard (judo silver), Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard (judo silver), Arthur Margelidon (judo bronze), Samantha Cornett (squash bronze), Shawn Delierre (squash bronze), and Francis Luna-Grenier (weightlifting bronze). A total of 22 sports were in action on Day 2.

Cycling – Women’s Mountain Bike

Emily Batty (2) and Catherine Pendrel (1) made it a 1-2 finish in the women’s mountain bike.

Canadians Emily Batty and Catharine Pendrel finished with the gold and silver medals, respectively, in today’s women’s mountain bike cross-country event. The two cruised through the whole course, finishing only .07 seconds apart. American Erin Huck finished in third, over five seconds back.

Batty described what it was like to have the crowd behind them: “Holy cow. I was super stoked for being on our home turf, but I had no idea it was going to be this amazing of a turnout. I get chills just thinking of it. The whole course was lined with, I don’t even know how many thousands of people here. It was just such an amazing vibe and energy.”

Cycling – Men’s Mountain Bike

Raphaël Gagné blew the men’s mountain bike competition away on Sunday and charged his way to the gold. He finished the course in a time of 1:31:14, which was 50 seconds faster than the second place finisher from Argentina.

Women’s Rugby Sevens

The Canadian women’s rugby sevens team went undefeated on their way to gold at Toronto 2015. They gave up the first points of the game to the USA before shutting them out the rest of the way en route to a 55-7 win. Canada took the gold in the first ever women’s rugby sevens tournament at the Pan Am Games.

The men’s rugby sevens team took inspiration from the women’s team and took home a gold medal of their own. They found themselves down late in the second half but a try from Harry Jones with only 30 seconds left sealed the gold. Jones said after the match: “I don’t think it has sunk in yet. I don’t think we realize what we just did. I feel like I am floating around right now.”

Diving – Women’s 3m Springboard

Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware finished in the gold and silver medal positions, respectively, in the women’s 3m springboard event. Abel blew away the competition and finished with a score of 384.70, while Ware scored 326.00 for the silver.

Shooting – Women’s 10m Air Pistol

Toronto 2015 gold medallist Lynda Kiejko competed at the 2003 Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo

Canada’s Lynda Kiejko shot her way to the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol on Sunday, which also earned Canada an Olympic berth in the event. She finished with a Finals Pan Am record score of 195.7 to finish ahead of Mexico’s Alejandra Zavala (194.3) and Lilian Castro of El Salvador (172.0).

Kiejko described how it went: “I’m pleased with my performance. I had a little bit of a struggle in the beginning, and then I pulled out my performance and really poured it on toward the end and made the final. That’s what it’s about, right?”

 Artistic Gymnastics – Women’s Team

The women’s artistic gymnastics team of Ellie Black, Maegan Chant, Madison Copiak, Isabela Onyshko and Victoria-Kayen Woo took home the silver medal today. The Canadians finished with a score of 166.500 to finish second to the Americans, who scored 173.800.

Equestrian – Team Dressage

Canada’s dressage team rode their way to a silver medal today. The team of Christopher von Martels, Brittany Fraser, Megan Lane and Belinda Trussell finished with a score of 454.938, to place second behind the USA.

Judo

Three Canadian judokas made their way onto the podium on Sunday. Antoine Bouchard (66kg) and Catherine Bouchard-Pinard (57kg) each won a silver medal, while Arthur Margelidon took home a bronze (73kg).

Squash – Men’s and Women’s Singles

Shawn Delierre won bronze in men’s singles.

Samantha Cornett and Shawn Delierre each won a bronze medal in squash singles. Cornett lost to American Amanda Shoby in the semifinal, while Delierre lost to Miguel A Rodriguez.

Weightlifting – Men’s 69kg

Francis Luna-Grenier won Canada’s first weightlifting medal of Toronto 2015, taking home bronze in the men’s 69kg weight class. Luna-Grenier finished with a score of 299 to finish third.
