Camélie Boisvenue grabs silver medal on last night of Pan Am karate

Camélie Boisvenue helped Canada close the karate competition with a silver medal, losing her 68-kg final 3-2 to Ecuador’s Valeria Echever.

“It’s hard to explain there is so much emotion, but I am proud for a silver,” said Boisvenue. “For sure I wanted the gold, and I was so close one point at the end. I am very excited and very proud with what I did. My first year on the senior team, and my first time in Pan Am Games and I am proud.”

Boisvenue scored early with two yukos and lead 2-0 with not much time left. In a final effort to win, Echever landed an ippon, giving her three points, to claim gold and take the fight 3-2.

Boisvenue earned herself a spot in the gold medal bout after winning her semifinal by judges’ discretion. When a contest ends in a tie, it’s up to the judges to choose who ultimately wins.

This is Boisvenue’s best international showing to date.

“When you come in and everyone is cheering for you and every point you did and everybody is there for you, you feel it. I took it positive,” she said.
