Canadian Roundup: X Games, World Cup champions and more podium finishes

With only a few weeks left in their winter sport seasons, Canadian athletes continue to dominate the podium, bringing home more World Cup medals and an overall title over the weekend.

And don’t forget the wrestlers, who also added 10 medals from their Pan Am Championships on the road to Rio.

Bobsleigh

Kaillie Humphries and Melissa Lotholz were crowned the overall BMW IBSF World Cup women’s bobsleigh champions after they finished second at the circuit’s final stop in Königssee, Germany on Friday. The pair ended their dominant season with eight medals – four gold, two silver, and two bronze – in eight events.

Freestyle Skiing – Moguls

It was a big weekend for Canadians on the slopes as Mikaël KingsburyAudrey Robichaud and Chloé Dufour-Lapointe each won two medals in Tazawako, Japan. Kingsbury finished second in moguls on Saturday before defending his dual moguls title on Sunday. Dufour-Lapointe and Robichaud finished second and third respectively in the individual moguls before reversing their finish in the dual event.

Ski Cross

Olympian Kelsey Serwa’s ski cross comeback continued with a World Cup silver at the Olympic test event in PyeongChang, South Korea. This was Serwa’s second World Cup podium of the season after winning silver in Innichen, Italy.

Alpine Skiing

Marie-Michèle Gagnon climbed to the top of a FIS World Cup podium on Sunday, racing to a combined time of one minute, 43.66 seconds after one run of super-G and one run of slalom. The Canadian’s second career victory came after she made her first world Cup podium in two years in Switzerland two weeks ago.

Snowboard – Big Air

Max Parrot continued successful big air season with a silver medal at the X Games in Oslo, Norway. Parrot landed a backside triple cork 1620 to score 90.33 points and win his sixth career X Games medal.

Freestyle Skiing – Superpipe

Cassie Sharpe won her first X Games gold medal after dominating the superpipe competition in Oslo on Sunday. The Canadian had a top-scoring run of 88.33 points to win gold, however she was so good that all three of her runs scored higher than second place.

Curling

It was gold for Team Alberta at the Tournament of Hearts on Sunday, getting the 7-6 victory over Team Northern Ontario with a single point on a last rock draw. As the winners of the national championship, the rink of Chelsea Carey (skip), Amy Nixon (third), Jocelyn Peterman (second) and Laine Peters (lead) will represent Canada at the World Women’s Curling Championship, where a podium finish will earn them a spot in the Roar of the Rings, the Canadian Olympic trials for PyeongChang 2018.

Wrestling

Freestyle wresters brought home 10 medals from the Pan American Championships in Frisco, Texas. Jasmine Mian (53kg), Samantha Stewart (55kg) and Justina Di Stasio (75kg) led the team’s medal haul, topping the podium in their respective categories.
