Canadian divers score eight medals at home

Canadian divers hauled eight medals – including four gold – at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Gatineau over the weekend.

Three of Canada’s medals came on the final day of competition, including a gold medal from Roseline Filion, who won the women’s 10m platform with a score of 377.00. Japanese divers Minami Irahashi and Nana Sasaki completed the podium placing second (375.00) and third (353.80) respectively.

After climbing the podium in the women’s 3m springboard (more on the below) Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware, finished second in the 3m synchro event. The Canadians scored 300.30 points, behind Chinese divers Chunting Wu and Zhihuan Xu, who won with 314.40. The bronze medal went to Australia’s Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney (353.80).

Philippe Gagne won the nation’s second silver on Sunday, in the men’s 3m springboard competition. Gagne shared the second podium spot with China’s Zhiyi Sun who’s score of 469.55, tied the Canadian’s. Matthieu Rosset won the gold medal with 504.15, while China’s Jianfeng Peng claimed bronze with 451.15. Canada’s Francois Imbeau-Dulac, also placed sixth in the men’s final.

Day 1 – April 9

Philippe Gagne and Francois Imbeau-Dulac dove to the nation’s first medal on home soil, winning the men’s 3m synchro event. Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion followed up with Canada’s second synchro victory, in the women’s 10m competition. Vincent Riendeau scored another gold medal on Saturday in the men’s 10m platform. Pamela Ware and Jennifer Abel also earned spots on the podium, after finishing second and third respectively in women’s 3m springboard.

Gagne and Imbeau-Dulac topped the podium after scoring 402.12 points. Zhiyi Sun and Jianfeng Peng of China took the second podium spot, while France’s team secured third. Canadians Peter Tach Mai and Felix Leathead also competed in the men’s 3m synchro event. Their pairs score of 373.62 was good enough for third, however FINA’s regulations only allows one medal per country in synchro events.

Olympic bronze medallists Benfeito and Filion, led the women’s 10m synchro competition into the final round, but were closely trailed by China who has dominated synchro events this season. After an impressive final dive by the Canadians the pair secured gold with 321.18 points. Chinese divers Jinming Li and Miya Suo finished second with 312.60 points, while Japan’s Nana Saski and Matsuri Arai finished third.

Riendeau claimed the men’s 10m platform gold medal with a score of 467.70. The Canadian the finished ahead of China’s Junjie Lian who stole silver. Maxim Bouchard also wore the maple leaf in the men’s 10m event, finishing sixth overall.

Ware and Abel both found the podium in women’s 3m springboard. Ware finished second with a score of 332.25, followed by Abel who finished third with 327.10 points. China’s Chunting Wu won the competition with a score of357.95.
