Rugby Canada men advance to quarterfinals at Olympic qualifier

With wins over Uruguay, Sri Lanka and a narrow loss to Germany on Saturday, Rugby Canada men’s sevens team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Olympic repechage on Sunday.

A chance to play in the first men’s rugby sevens tournament in Olympic history on the line this weekend in Monaco, Canada started the day beating Uruguay 33-0.

A punishing 57-0 result over Sri Lanka followed the opening victory for Canada.

Germany though, broke Canada’s shutout streak taking an early 7-0 lead in the final group match for both countries. Canada responded with two tries in the first half and led the match on two occasions, but a German try with less than a minute to conclusion helped the European side to a 21-19 win.

The loss to Germany means a tougher quarterfinal match for Canada. At 6 a.m. ET (live on TSN) the Canadians will need to beat Russia to keep its sights on Rio. Only the winner of the tournament will advance to the Olympic Games this summer.
