Celebrated internationally since 1948, Olympic Day is a worldwide celebration that encourages people to get active, learn about the Olympics and discover new sports. In photos, here’s how Olympic day was celebrated in three Canadian cities this month.

St John’s, Newfoundland

An estimated 40,000 participants took part in 138 Olympic Day programs across Canada to achieve its stated goals to: engage local sport clubs, celebrate with Olympic role models, participate in physical activities and provide inspiration for Canada’s future Olympians.

Richmond, British Columbia

Olympic Day events accompany an educational aspect. Using Canadian Olympic School Program resources, educators can access a toolkit that provides ideas on how to organize Olympic Day in their community. Students can also learn about the Olympic torch relay and history of the Games including Canadian trivia.

Montreal, Quebec

Olympic Day is celebrated in over 160 countries worldwide and growing. The International Olympic Committee this year launched the #OlympicPeace initiative online with “vision of building a better world through sport – by inspiring the spirit of unity, hope and peace for a better tomorrow.”
