Sochi Winter Games Start in

London 2012

Event Details

The Games of the XXX Olympiad took place between July 27 and August 12, 2012. It marked London’s third time hosting the Olympic Games, but first in 64 years. A 2.5 km tract of previously industrial land in East London was transformed into Olympic Park, which was the home of 17,000 athletes and officials and included a wildlife habitat, public space and riverside gardens, markets and cafes.

At these Games, 26 sports were contested, many of them in 13 brand new sport venues. Of note, women’s boxing was included in the Olympic program for the first time since 1904. London 2012 officials attempted to be the first Summer Games Host City to fully embrace the environmental movement and sustainability.

The Olympic Flame arrived in May 2012 for its 70-day relay across the United Kingdom.

The Canadian Olympic Team tied its previous Games performance from Beijing 2008, and third-best summer performance, with 18 medals for a tie as 13th in the overall medal count.

The Team was lead by Canada’s 2012 Chef de Mission, swimming icon Mark Tewksbury.
