Games of the V Olympiad
Held in Stockholm, the 1912 Olympic Games were a model of efficiency. The Swedish hosts introduced the use of unofficial electronic timing devices for the track events, as well as the first use of a public address system and photo finish. The modern pentathlon was added to the Olympic program. Women’s events in swimming and diving were also introduced.
At the Stockholm Games, Canada’s George Goulding was a gold medallist in the 10,000m walk. But the best performance from the 36 Canadian athletes came from swimmer George Hodgson who became the first multiple gold medallist in Canada by winning the 1,500m freestyle and the 400m freestyle events. Hodgson’s medals were the first medals in swimming for Canada. Long jumper Calvin Bricker, who brought home bronze in 1908, and hammer thrower Duncan Gillis gave Canada its two silver medals. Bronze came from William Happeny in pole vault and rower Everard Butler in single sculls. Canadian rowers won medals for the third consecutive Olympic Games, with Everard Butler winning bronze in the single sculls.
