Medal magic on the waterAugust 8, 2012
In the men’s K-1 1,000m, van Koeverden held on to add a second silver medal to his Olympic resume which also includes a gold and bronze. Though he wanted the gold, the two-time flag bearer for Canada said he “can find the silver lining in silver”.
“Overall I am happy with my race,” said the Oakville native. “I feel like my race plan went well. I was looking for a good finish.”
Moments later van Koeverden’s good friend Mark Oldershaw put in a hard push during the last 250m of his C-1 1,000m race to earn his right on the Olympic podium, with a bronze.
“I’m just so happy, I don’t know what to say,” said Oldershaw. “Everything has led up to this. I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a little kid, every birthday blowing out the candles, every shooting star, every eyelash has been dreaming of getting on this podium.”
