Athletes’ Commission welcomes new additions

TORONTO – Six 2012 Olympians were elected or re-elected to the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Athletes Commission.

The four new members of the Athletes’ Commission are Mike Brown (Swimming), Oluseyi Smith (Athletics), Erin McLeod (Soccer) and Nicole Forrester (Athletics). Four-time Olympic medallist Adam van Koeverden (Canoe-Kayak) and 2012 Olympic silver medallist Andréanne Morin (Rowing) were re-elected to their positions on the Athletes’ Commission.

“We are excited to welcome some new voices, and some familiar faces, to the Athletes’ Commission,” said Chair Deidra Dionne (Freestyle Skiing). “The leadership in this group will help continue the tradition of a strong voice for athletes at the Canadian Olympic Committee.”

“The athletes are at the core of everything we do,” said Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut. “Canadian athletes are leaders, both within the sport community and in society in general. Their voice is absolutely crucial to our work, ensuring that Canadian athletes have everything they need to compete against the best in the world and win.”

These athletes join Chair Deidra Dionne (Freestyle Skiing), Helen Upperton (Bobsleigh), Jason Myslicki (Nordic Combined), Jeff Christie (Luge), Jeff Pain (Skeleton) and Steve Omischl (Freestyle Skiing) from winter sports.

International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission representative Beckie Scott and Pan American Sport Organization Athletes’ Commission President Alexandra Orlando are ex-officio members of the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission.

The Canadian Olympic Committee extends its heartfelt thanks to the outgoing members of the Athletes’ Commission: Adam Keerk (Rowing), David Calder (Rowing), Rick Say (Swimming) and Perdita Felicien (Athletics).

The Athletes’ Commission represents the voice of athletes to the Canadian Olympic Committee Board of Directors and is instrumental in presenting Canadian athletes’ perspectives on policy and program decisions of the COC, such as Olympic Team selection, athlete funding and other policy matters within the high performance sport community.
