Canadian Olympic Committee Congratulates Canada’s Women’s Hockey Team on its Silver Medal Win at the Women’s World Hockey Championships

TORONTO – Today, the Canadian Olympic Committee released the following statements following the Canadian Women’s silver medal win at the World Hockey Championships in Ottawa.

“Every time our Canadian women step onto the ice, sport magic is bound to happen and today, in front of thousands of hometown fans in our nation’s capital, Canada’s red and white gave their all in the gold medal game. While I know this was not the result the team wanted, I am very proud of our team’s performance at these women’s World Hockey Championships. This silver medal, as well as the performance throughout the entire tournament, shows that this team is a force to be reckoned with. On behalf of the Canadian Olympic Committee, I want to congratulate everyone involved on this silver medal performance.”
– Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee

“This silver medal win is a tremendous achievement for Canada’s women’s hockey team. Our women were impressive throughout the entire World Championships, and their dominance over the competition grew with each passing game. While I know that they were shooting for gold at this tournament, this result still proves that our Canadian women will be the major force on the Sochi ice as they strive to defend their Olympic title.”
-Steve Podborski, Canadian Olympic Team Chef de Mission, Sochi 2014

“The Canada-US rivalry at the Olympic Games and World Championships always brings out the best in both teams. While playing at home is a bonus, we know how much pressure was on the backs of these women, as defending Olympic Champions, but they were poised and confident and definitely treated Canada to an exciting performance in this gold medal game.”
– Jean-Luc Brassard, Canadian Olympic Team Assistant Chef de Mission, Sochi 2014
