Canadian Olympic Committee Congratulates Olympians On Gala Sports Quebec Honour

TORONTO – Last night, the Canadian Olympic Committee issued the following statement congratulating the award winners at the annual Gala Sports Quebec event in Montreal.

“On behalf of the Canadian Olympic Committee, congratulations to Dominique Maltais, Mikael Kingsbury, Emilie Heymans, Rhian Wilkinson, Nicolas Gill, Andréanne Morin, Marie-Claude Deslières and all of the other 2013 Gala Sports Quebec winners at last night’s celebration. Quebec’s bright sport legacy continues to shine through this year’s winners and we are enormously proud of their accomplishments. I have full confidence that with athletes of this calibre, Canada will be delivering exciting podium performances in Sochi, Rio and for years to come.”

Dominique Maltais is a two-time Olympian and the 2006 Bronze medallist, Snowboard Cross. Mikael Kingsbury is the 2013 World Champion, Freestyle Ski and will represent Canada at Sochi 2014. Both are this year’s recipients of the Gala Sports Quebec International Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by the Canadian Olympic Committee and awarded to one female and one male Quebec athlete with outstanding international honours.

Emilie Heymans, four-time medallist, and the first and only Canadian Olympian to medal at four consecutive Olympic Games was also honoured at last night’s Gala. Other Olympians who were also award recipients included: Rhian Wilkinson (soccer), two-time Olympian and London 2012 bronze medallist; Nicolas Gill (judo), two-time Olympic medallist and coach of London 2012 bronze medallist, Antoine Valois-Fortier; Andréanne Morin (rowing), three-time Olympian and London 2012 silver medallist; and Marie-Claude Deslières (water polo), Sydney 2000 Olympian.

The 40th edition of Gala Sports Quebec took place at the Centre Mont-Royal in Montreal and is coordinated by the Corporation Sports Quebec. Conducted annually, it supports the promotion of sporting excellence by recognizing outstanding athletic performances. Quebec Sports is a private organization, providing Quebec-based sports federations with management support. It also helps promote and defend the interests of the sport community in Quebec.
