Canadian Olympic Committee CEO and Secretary General Chris Overholt speaks to a private audience at the Association of Sport Performance Centres Forum at the University of Toronto, October 19, 2012.

  • OPENING VIDEO #1
  • GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE.
  • I’D LIKE TO THANK THE ASSOCIATION OF SPORT PERFORMANCE CENTRES AMERICAS’ CONTINENTAL FORUM FOR INVITING ME TO SPEAK WITH YOU TODAY.
  • THE FACT THAT YOU’RE ALL HERE SUGGESTS A FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING AMONG YOU THAT THE STRENGTH OF MOST ANY BUSINESS ORGANIZATION IS BUILT ON TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS.
  • TRUST AND EXPERIENCE WITH ONE ANOTHER IS THE CURRENCY OF MOST ANY LASTING RELATIONSHIPS AND THE HEART OF MOST SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS.
  • I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT ALL OF YOU ARE HERE TODAY BECAUSE YOU ARE IN THE UN-ENDENDING PROCESS OF BUILDING THOSE KINDS OF RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WIDER SPORT COMMUNITY.
  • AND BECAUSE YOU UNDERSTAND THE OPPORTUNITIES LIKE THIS TO COME TOGETHER, TO LEARN TO GROW YOUR RELATIONSHIPS IS FUNDEMENTAL TO YOUR SUCCESS.
  • OF COURSE, ANY OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN A ROOM WITH SMART PEOPLE, WHO UNDERSTAND AND NURTURE VALUES LIKE ACCOUNTABILITY, INNOVATION, AND THE IMPACT OF DEVELOPING LEADERS IS ALWAYS INTERESTING TO THOSE OF US IN THE COC.
  • SO I WAS PLEASED TO BE INVITED TO JOIN YOU TODAY.
  • <Pause>
  • LET ME START BY OFFERING YOU A LITTLE BIT OF CONTEXT AS IT RELATES TO MY CURRENT POSITION.
  • AS SOME OF YOU MIGHT KNOW, I’M ACTUALLY A RELATIVE NEW-COMER TO THIS BRANCH OF THE CANADIAN SPORT FAMILY.
  • I ACTUALLY BEGAN MY CAREER IN THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY AS A SALES REPRESENTATIVE FOR LONDON LIFE HERE IN TORONTO IN 1989.
  • FROM THERE TO THE COC HAS BEEN A CIRCURTOUS ROUTE TO BE SURE — YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE LIFE WILL TAKE YOU.
  • ALONG THE WAY, I’M FORTUNATE TO HAVE GAINED SOME VALUABLE EXPERIENCE IN PROFESSIONAL SPORT IN NORTH AMERICA — SPECIFICALLY, THE NFL, NHL AND THE NBA.
  • HOWEVER, THERE’S NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT I HAVE BEEN AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT I HAVE IN MY CAREER IN LARGE PART DUE TO THE MANY SKILLS I LEARNED IN THOSE EARLY DAYS.
  • IT’S ALSO THE CASE THAT I LEARNED A GOOD NUMBER OF MY EARLY LEADERSHIP LESSONS DURING THAT TIME.
  • IN FACT, IT WAS A SALES CONFERENCE IN 1989 THAT I FIRST HEARD WHAT I HAVE COME TO UNDERSTAND AS A FUNDEMENTAL FACT OF LIFE
  • CHANGE IS INEVITABLE, GROWTH IS OPTIONAL’
  • IF YOU’LL ALLOW ME, I THOUGHT WE COULD SPEND SOME TIME SHARING A LITTLE BIT OF THE STORY OF THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE OVER THE LAST 28 MONTHS.
  • INDEED, IT’S BEEN A TIME OF GREAT CHANGE — AND I’M PLEASE TO SAY FOR ALL OF US TREMENDOUS GROWTH BOTH LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY.
  • AND PERHAPS AS IMPORTANTLY, A REALIZATION OF BIG MOMENTUM – A MOMENTUM THAT WE ALL FEEL TO BE NOT ONLY A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC MOVEMENT – BUT A DEEP PERSONAL REPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT WE CAPITALIZE ON ALL OF WHAT HAS BEEN PLACED BEFORE US.
  • SO, AGAIN IF YOU’LL ALLOW ME TO TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE EARLY CHAPTERS OF A NEW STORY THAT WE AT THE COC ARE ALL WRITING AT PRESENT
  • FIRST, SOME CONTEXT….
  • VANCOUVER –
    • A GAME CHANGER
    • DEMONSTRATION OF POTENTIAL FOR A SUSTAINABLE NEW TRAJECTORY FOR THE MOVEMENT.
  • AN INCREDIBLE COLLECTION OF ASSETS
  • ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL BRANDS IN THE WORLD I.E. OLYMPIC RINGS
  • SPORT AS A CONNECTOR OF PEOPLE, TRANCENDS CULTURE, UNIFYING EXPRESSIONS – OLYMPIC GAMES
  • A COMMUNITY THAT IS INHERITANTLY FILLED WITH HIGH ACHIEVERS, PEOPLE THAT THINK ABOUT PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE, INTEGRITY AND DISCIPLINE.
  • SIMPLY STATED – A LABORATORY FOR LEADERSHIP.
  • AN INCREDIBLE BRAND THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF, IN FACT, DEFINES ITSELF, WRITES IT OWN STORY – OFTEN TIMES IN DRAMATIC FASHION AND AS IMPORTANTLY – IT LIVES.
  • OUR ATHLETES ARE A WALKING, TALKING, BREATHING EXPRESSION OF IT.
  • IT HAS DEPTH, IT’S COMPLEX
  • IT’S A MOSIAC
  • THE COC BRAND IS WHO WE ARE
  • CULTURALLY DIVERSE
  • FROM THE FOUR CORNERS OF OUR GREAT NATION
  • A REFLECTON OF THE SPIRIT OF OUR COUNTRY
  • ALL OF THIS…A POWERFUL OPPORTUNITY
  • ALL OF THIS…. A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY
  • SO WHAT TO DO….
  • BUT BEFORE WE GO THERE, SOME CONTEXT AND A FEW WORDS ON CULTURE, THE IMPORTANCE OF PEOPLE AND SOME FUNDEMENTAL PRINCIPLES WE’VE APPLIED.
  • IN MANY WAYS, THESE PRINCIPLES HAVE ACTED AS TOUCHSTONES FOR DECISION MAKING, AS WELL AS BECOME THE VALUES THAT ARE ATTACHED TO A FRAMEWORK FOR DECISION MAKING THAT I’LL TALK ABOUT LATER.
  • SO WHAT ARE THESE PRINCIPLES?

<SLIDE #>

  • THAT IT IS ESSENTIAL THE ORGANIZATION HAVE A TRUE SENSE OF ACCOUNTABILITY EMBEDDED THROUGHOUT IT.
  • <PAUSE>
  • THE IMPORTANCE OF FOSTERING A COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT AT ALL LEVELS AND THE PHILOSOPHY THAT IT’S O.K. TO CHALLENGE THE NORM.
  • <PAUSE>
  • AN INTENSE AND EVERYDAY FOCUS ON THE IDEA ANDTHE ACTION REQUIRED FOR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT THROUGHOUT THE ORGANZIATION…
  • ALL WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT SMALL STEPS CAN LEAD TO BIG CHANGES.
  • <PAUSE>
  • THE POWER OF MOMENTUM: RECOGNIZING IT WHEN IT HAPPENS AND JUMPING ON THE OPPORTUNITY; AND
  • THE IMPORTANCE OF ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE BRIGHT SPOTS IN CHALLENGING SITUATIONS…
  • AGAIN, ALL WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT IT’S A WHOLE LOT EASIER TO FIND THE POSITIVES IF YOU’VE DONE THE PREPARATION IN ADVANCE. MORE ON THAT A BIT LATER.
  • I’M GOING TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER NOW.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND GRUMPY COACHES

<SLIDE # >

  • IT’S MY FIRM BELIEF THAT EVERYONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ‘LEAD.’
  • WE ALL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGE AND TO INFLUENCE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT IN OTHERS AND IN OURSELVES.
  • CERTAINLY, MANY OF YOU ASSEMBLED HERE HAVE BEEN AROUND THE LEADERSHIP TRACK A FEW TIMES.
  • WHILE THERE ARE CERTAINLY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MANY OF OUR ORGANIZATIONS…
  • I’M CONFIDENT WE ALL SHARE THE WILLINGNESS TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO ACHEVE THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF EXCELLENCE IN ALL ASPECTS OF OUR ORGANIZATION, AND THE SERVICES WE DELIVER.
  • WHEN YOU’RE LEADING AN ORGANIZATION, YOU’RE ALSO A STEWARD OF THE ORGANIZATION’S VISION AND MANDATE.
  • THAT MAKES US, AS LEADERS, THE SINGLE-MOST ACCOUNTABLE PEOPLE IN THE ORGANZIATION TO THE VISION’S REALIZATION.
  • OVER THE COURSE OF MY CAREER, I’VE BEEN FORTUNATE TO WORK WITH SOME GREAT LEADERS:
  • CERTAINLY RICHARD PEDDIE, C.E.O. OF MAPLE LEAF SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT;
  • WAYNE HUIZENGA, FOUNDER OF BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO, WASTE MANAGEMENT, INC. AND AUTO NATION, AS WELL AS OWNER OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS.
  • AND:
  • BILL PARCELLS, WHO HAD A REPUTATION FOR HOLDING HIS PLAYERS TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
  • AND LET ME TELL YOU – BECAUSE THIS GUY KNEW ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY, EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WORKED WITH HIM KNEW ABOUT IT, TOO.
  • LONDON EXAMPLES;
  • IAN MOSS
  • ALYSON WALKER
  • MARK TEWKSBURY

COLLABORATION TO CHALLENGE THE NORM

  • THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE IS BUILT ON ABOUT A 106 YEAR FOUNDATION.
  • THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US LEFT AN OUTSTANDING LEGACY OF PASSION AND COMMITMENT.
  • BUT JUST AS ATHLETES MAY NEED TO VARY THEIR TRAINING REGIMES TO BUST THROUGH A PLATEAU…
  • SOMETIMES IMPROVEMENT CAN ONLY COME WHEN YOU CHALLENGE THE ACCEPTED NORM AND GO BEYOND THE COMFORT ZONE.
  • I’VE FOUND THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO DO THIS THAN THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH THE RIGHT TEAM OF PEOPLE.
  • AT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, WE HAVE CONSCIOUSLY ASSEMBLED A TEAM TO BRING OUR ORGANIZATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
  • TO SAY THEY ARE AN ECCLECTIC AND STRONG-WILLED GROUP FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.
  • THEY WERE RECRUITED BECAUSE THEY HAD THE SKILLS, BUT ALSO BECAUSE THEY WERE VERY DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND STRONG MINDS ARE ESSENTIAL TO COLLABORATIVE CHANGE.
  • ANOTHER ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IS PROVIDING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE IT’S O.K. FOR THEM TO CHALLENGE THE BOSS — I.E., ME— WITHOUT FEAR OF REPRISIALS.
  • SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER, BEING OPEN TO DISCUSSION, NOTING THAT THE BOSS ISN’T ALWAYS RIGHT — WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT…
  • IF NO ONE’S DISAGREEING WITH THE BOSS’S IDEAS, WHAT’S THE POINT OF HAVING ANYONE ELSE THERE?
  • <ALON MARCOVICI>
  • OF COURSE, SOMETIMES I DO GET TO BE THE BOSS AND THE DECISION HAS TO BE MINE ALONE.
  • OTHER TIMES THE DECISION GETS MADE BY COMMITTEE.
  • BUT IT’S THE ACTUAL EXERCISE OF FREE AND OPEN DISCUSSION THAT’S IMPORTANT.
  • NOW, THE THING ABOUT THIS KIND OF LEADERSHIP IS THAT THE MOMENT YOU TAKE ON THIS PRINCIPLE AS YOUR OWN, LIFE GETS HARDER.
  • IMAGINE, IF YOU WILL: THE BRAINS BEHIND NIKE’S BRAND SAVVY, BRAINSTORMING WITH…
  • THE FORMER ENFORCER OF THE HARPER GOVERNMENT’S MESSAGE DISCIPLINE, WORKING TO MOVE THE BALL FORWARD WITH…
  • ONE OF THE DYNAMIC MEDIA INNOVATORS FROM THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC BROADCAST CONSORTIUM, AND…
  • ALL OF THEM BEING CHALLENGED ON THEIR IDEAS BY ONE OF THE TOP LEGAL BRAINS IN THE COUNTRY.
  • SOMETIMES I’M NOT SURE WHETHER TO APPLAUD OR TO DUCK FOR COVER.
  • CERTAINLY WITH THIS TEAM, THERE’S ALSO THE QUESTION OF WHEN TO PICK THEM UP OR TO DUST THEM OFF.
  • IF THINGS GO OFF THE RAILS, SOMETIMES THEY’RE SO BUSY AT BEING HARD ON THEMSELVES, THAT PILING ON WOULD ONLY MAKE THINGS WORSE.
  • THAT’S WHERE KNOWING YOUR PEOPLE REALLY BECOMES IMPORTANT.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

<SLIDE # >

  • SO ONCE WE HAD THAT TEAM ASSEMBLED, WHAT DOES CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT LOOK LIKE AT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE?
  • IT’S THE PURSUIT OF IMPROVEMENT EACH AND EVERY DAY, MOVING THE BALL FORWARD INCH BY INCH – TOGETHER.
  • IT’S TAKING A STRONG BRAND AND MAKING IT STRONGER.
  • THIS, IN PARTICULAR, IS SOMETHING WE’VE TAKEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO AND WE FEEL LIKE WE’RE MAKING GOOD STRIDES IN HOW THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM BRAND IS REPRESENTED.
  • ABOUT A YEAR AGO, WE UNDERTOOK TO REFRESH THE BRAND FROM THE PERSPECTIVE THAT THE EMOTIONAL CONNECTION FOR CANADIANS LIES WITH THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM.
  • WITH THAT VIEW, IT IS IN FACT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM,AND NOT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, THAT IS OUR BRAND.
  • LOGICALLY, WE FELT IT APPROPRIATE TO REVISIT ALL THAT WE STOOD FOR WITH ATHLETES AT OUR CENTRE.
  • WE WENT ABOUT PURPOSEFULLY SHIFTING OUR STORY SO IT WAS ABOUT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM, AND NOT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE.
  • EVERYTHING CENTRES AROUND THE ATHLETES AT OUR CORE.
  • WE COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED IN HOW OUR WORK HAS BEEN RECEIVED.
  • 600 MILLION MEDIA IMPRESSIONS
  • 70 MAJOR MEDIA STORIES
  • 25 PER CENT SUSTAINED LIFT IN WEB TRAFFIC
  • 100 PER CENT GROWTH IN FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS
  • 700 PER CENT GROWTH IN TWITTER FOLLOWERS
  • < DENIS KIM VIDEO>

POWER OF MOMENTUM

<SLIDE # >

  • OF COURSE, WHEN IT COMES TO MOMENTUM, YOU DON’T ALWAYS RECOGNIZE WHEN THAT BOULDER YOU’VE BEEN TRYING TO BUDGE FOR SO LONG ACTUALLY STARTS ROLLING.
  • BUT ONCE IT DOES, YOU’VE GOT TO JUMP ON AND HANG ON OR THE OPPORTUNITY CAN PASS YOU BY.
  • WE’VE BEEN CONSCIOUSLY ANALYSING METRICS FROM OUR RECENT REBRANDING OF THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM.
  • WE ACTUALLY SET OURSELVES UP SO THAT THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS, MARKETING PARTNER FEEDBACK AND MEDIA MONITORING, WE’D BE ABLE TO FOLLOW THE CAMPAIGN AND MEASURE ITS PROGRESS.
  • THAT’S ALLOWED US TO STRIKE WHILE THE PROVERBIAL IRON IS HOT AND PUT MORE TIME AND RESOURCES INTO OUR CAMPAIGN AT THE RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME.
  • IT’S RECOGNIZING WHEN YOUR MOMENTUM IS HAPPENING, AND TAKING THE NECESSARY STEPS TO HARNESS IT WHICH IS A FUNDAMENTAL PART IN SUCCESSFUL LEADERSHIP.

BRIGHT SPOTS

  • FINALLY, I ALWAYS FACTOR IN THE NECESSITY OF BRIGHT SPOTS.
  • WHAT DO I MEAN BY THAT?
  • SOMETIMES, IT ALL GOES HORRIBLY WRONG AND YOU’RE AT AN IMPASSE AS TO HOW YOU’LL MOVE FORWARD.
  • OR, PUT ANOTHER WAY: WHEN YOU’RE UP TO YOUR NECK IN ALLIGATORS, IT’S HARD TO REMEMBER THAT YOU WENT IN TO DRAIN THE SWAMP.
  • THAT’S WHERE THE BRIGHT SPOTS ARE NEVER MORE IMPORTANT.
  • I CAN’T TAKE CREDIT FOR THE CONCEPT OF BRIGHT SPOTS.
  • IT’S THE LANGUAGE OF CHIP AND DAN HEATHE, AUTHORS OF SWITCH: HOW TO CHANGE THINGS WHEN CHANGE IS HARD AND MADE TO STICK.
  • NO MATTER HOW MESSY A SITUATION, THERE ARE ALWAYS BRIGHT SPOTS, ALWAYS POSITIVE THINGS.
  • YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND THEM; YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK…
  • NOW, I’M A POSITIVE PERSON, BUT I’M ALSO A REALIST.
  • AS SUCH, I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE KEY TO BEING ABLE TO LOOK FOR THOSE BRIGHT SPOTS IS TO HAVE DONE THE GROUND WORK IN ADVANCE.
  • WHAT DO I MEAN BY THAT?
  • WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG, IT HELPS IMMESURABLY IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A PLAN TO GET YOU BACK ON TRACK.
  • IT MEANS YOU CAN TAKE COMFORT IN THAT FACT THAT YOU KNOW WHAT THE PLAN IS AND SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE.
  • IT GIVES YOU THE BREATHING ROOM TO ALLOW YOURSELF TO SEE THE LITTLE POSITIVES OF THE SITUATION.
  • YOU’LL FIND THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS ONE OR TWO THINGS — MORE OFTEN THAN NOT THEY’RE PEOPLE — THAT GIVE YOU CAUSE FOR OPTIMISM.
  • WHEN YOU FIND THAT BRIGHT SPOT, THAT GOOD ENERGY, FOLLOW IT.
  • THIS KIND OF THINKING IS A CONSCIOUS CHOICE, AND NOT SOMETHING THAT ALWAYS COMES NATURALLY, PARTICULARLY IN THE MORE DIFFICULT SITUATIONS.
  • BUT I’VE ALWAYS FOUND THAT THE ANSWER WILL LIE IN THE POSITIVE, RATHER THAN THE NEGATIVE. IT CERTAINLY HAS FOR ME.
  • IT’S THROUGH CONCERTED APPLICATION OF THESE PRINCIPLES THAT I’M PROUD TO SAY THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE TEAM HAS MOVED THE BALL FORWARD SIGNIFICANTLY.
  • <PAUSE>
  • IN ADDITION, I ALSO IMPLEMENT A STANDARD FRAMEWORK OF DECISION MAKING WHEN FACED WITH A NEW SITAUTION.
  • FIRST, I TAKE THE STEPS TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE FACTS.
  • THERE’S AN OLD SAYING THAT “IN WAR, THE FIRST CASUALTY IS TRUTH.”
  • I WOULD NOTE THAT IT’S THE SEPARATION OF FACT AND SPECULATION THAT ULTIMATELY TAKES YOU OUT OF THE FOG.
  • THE NEXT THING WE DO IS CONSCIOUSLY UNDERSTAND, AND THEN TAKE INTO ACCOUNT, THE PERSONALITIES INVOLVED.
  • INTERESTING POINT:
  • WHEN I SAY “UNDERSTAND THE PERSONALITIES”, WE’VE FOUND IT MOST HELPFUL UNDERSTANDING NOT JUST THE CULTURE THAT PERSON IS COMING FROM, BUT ALSO WHO THEY ARE AND HOW THEY WORK AS A PERSON.
  • ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND THE PERSONALITY, YOU HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT’S DRIVING THEM.
  • FROM THERE, IT’S A WHOLE LOT EASIER TO FIGURE OUT JUST HOW THEY WORK INTO THE EQUATION OF YOUR ORGANIZATION, ANDTHE SITUATION YOU’RE DEALING WITH.
  • OF COURSE, AS MUCH AS THERE’S A DIVERSITY OF PERSONALITIES THAT IMPACT BEHAVIOUR, IT’S REALLY ABOUT BROADLY UNDERSTANDING WHO YOU’RE DEALING WITH.
  • WHAT’S PARTICUARLY GREAT ABOUT SPORT IS THAT IT REALLY DOES CREATES A LEVEL OF COMMON GROUND ON WHICH ALL OF US — REGARDLESS OF BACKGROUND — CAN BUILD.
  • <PAUSE>
  • MY NEXT RULE OF THUMB IS TO RELY ON THE EXPERTS.
  • WHEN I STARTED AT THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, ONE OF THE DIFFERENCES I ENCOUNTERED WAS A TRUE SCARCITY OF RESOURCES IN THE AMATEUR SPORT WORLD.
  • AND IN THAT SORT OF ENVIRONMENT, PEOPLE ARE USED TO COMING UP WITH THEIR OWN SOLUTION AND RUNNING WITH IT.
  • YOU’RE FACED WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE WHO ARE ALL CONVINCED THAT THEIR IDEA IS THE RIGHT ONE.
  • IT’S TIMES LIKE THOSE THAT YOU NEED TO RELY ON THE EXPERTS — THE ONES WHO KNOW IT BEST, OR HAVE LIVED IT LONGEST — FOR INSIGHT.
  • IN OUR CASE AT THE COC — WE’VE LOOKED TO OUR ATHLETE COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE A SIGNIFICANT VALUE COMPASS FOR OUR DIRECTIONS, AND FOR OUR ACTIONS TO GET THERE.
  • OF COURSE, EVEN IF YOU HAVE STRONG VALUES AND PRINCIPLES, AND YOU WORK LIKE MAD TO INSERT THEM INTO YOUR BUSINESS SO THEY FILTER DOWN EFFECTIVELY, YOU’RE STILL NOT THERE YET.
  • IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE GUMPTION TO ACTUALLY APPLY THEM AND MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN THEN YOU’RE NO BETTER OFF WHEN YOU WERE BEFORE.
  • JUST A FEW COMMENTS, THEN, ON THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING DECISIVE.
  • TYPICALLY, WE’RE BEST SERVED WHEN TIMELY AND ASSURED — BECAUSE IF IT REACHES THE HIGHER LEVELS OF THE ORGANIZATION, IT’S EITHER BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE OR IT’S NEW BUT FAIRLY PRESSING.
  • AND IF YOU DON’T MAKE THE DECISION WITH CONVICTION, IT’LL VERY LIKELY BE RECEIVED EXACTLY THE SAME WAY.
  • <PAUSE>
  • IT’S THROUGH CONCERTED APPLICATION OF THESE PRINCIPLES THAT I’M PROUD TO SAY THE COC TEAM HAS MOVED THE BALL FORWARD SIGNIFICANTLY.

COC TODAY

  • THE COC TODAY STILL HAS A GREAT DEAL OF SIMILARITIES AS THE ONE THAT EXISTED WHEN I JOINED THE TEAM.
  • GREAT PEOPLE, A STORIED HISTORY, AND A MANDATE TO SERVE CANADA’S TRUEST HEROES — OUR CANADIAN OLYMPIC ATHLETES.
  • BUT THROUGH A LOT OF SOUL SEARCHING, AND A LOT OF HARD TRUTHS, AS WELL AS SOME STRONG LEADERSHIP FROM WITH THAT ECLECTIC GROUP I TOLD YOU ABOUT EARLIER, WE HAVE TRULY TAKEN IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
  • TODAY, OUR MANIFESTO SOUNDS LIKE THIS:
  • IT IS THE C.O.C.’S RESPONSIBILITY TO LEAD THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM’S PODIUM SUCCESS AND TO ADVANCE THE OLYMPIC VALUES IN CANADA.
  • WE ARE INDEPENDENT AND PRIVATELY FUNDED, AND WE DELIVER THE TOOLS CANADA’S ELITE ATHLETES NEED TO PERFORM AT THEIR BEST EVERY DAY.
  • WE ARE THE BACKBONE OF CANADA’S OLYMPIC MOVEMENT, AND PREPARE THE TEAM FOR THE OLYMPIC, YOUTH OLYMPIC AND PAN AMERICAN GAMES.
  • AND BY SHARING OUR ATHLETES’ STORIES, WE INSPIRE CANADIANS THROUGH THE POWER OF SPORT — 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, 365 DAYS A YEAR.

CONCLUSION:

  • FANTASTIC JOURNEY SO FAR.
  • ACHIEVED SOME INCREDIBLE RESULTS TOGETHER ALREADY AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED.
  • WONDERFUL SUPPORT FROM PRIVATE SECTOR.
  • THERE’S A GROWING UNITY WITHIN THE SPORT COMMUNITY – RELATIONSHIPS WITH ALL OF OUR SPORT PARTNERS
  • AND AS REWARDING AS ANY OF THIS IS THAT WE TODAY ENJOY STRONGER, DEEPER MORE CONNECTED RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR ATHLETES.
  • OUR BRAND AND OUR BUSINESS IS STRONGER BECAUSE WE ARE MORE CONNECTED TO THE VERY PEOPLE WHO SIT AT ITS HEART.
  • SO YOU SEE, OUR BUSINESS IN NO DIFFERENT THAN YOURS.
  • HOW DO WE KNOW WE’RE BEING SUCCESSFUL – IT’S WRITTEN ON OUR ATHLETES FACES!
