Dr. Jacques Rogge helps Canadian Olympic Committee raise funds for Canadian athletes

Quebec City International Olympic Committee President Dr. Jacques Rogge headlined an historic fundraiser in Quebec City today that raised over $800,000 in funds for Canadian athletes.

“It is always a pleasure to come to Canada, Quebec in particular, and even more to participate is such an important event for Canadian sport and for Canadian athletes. Hosted by the Canadian Olympic Committee and President Marcel Aubut, this event will help young future Olympians to pursue their sport and achieve their Olympic dreams,” said Rogge.

“Canada is one of only a few nations to host three Olympic Games,” he continued. “As with Montreal 1976, Calgary 1988 and Vancouver 2010, this event brings the country and its citizens together, from coast to coast, to celebrate this event, to express the same feeling of national pride, and to bear witness to the affection Canadians have for Olympism.”

“Athletes are our raison d’être. They are at the core of the Canadian Olympic Committee’s business, and the heart of the Olympic Movement,” said Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut. “We are very grateful that Dr. Rogge is here with us today to help support young athletes as they continue to work towards the ultimate goal in sport: the Olympic Games.”

“Bell is honoured to be part of this important event as we support the Olympic dreams of Canada’s young athletes,” said George Cope, President and CEO of BCE and Bell Canada, as well as the honorary chair of the event.

The event was held in conjunction with the SportAccord International Convention, running from May 20-25 in Quebec City. SportAccord’s mission is to unite, support and promote its Member international sports federations and organizations for the co-ordination and protection of their common aims and interests, communication and co-operation, while at the same time conserving and respecting their autonomy.
