TORONTO – Today, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) issued the following statement regarding the passing of iconic Canadian Sport Journalist, Richard Garneau:

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Richard Garneau, a true champion and trusted voice of the Canadian Olympic movement, a passionate advocate for Canadian athletes and a trailblazer in the field of sport journalism. A gentleman of the highest calibre, Richard had a depth, charisma and unyielding integrity that led him to be respected and admired by athletes and journalists alike in both his native Quebec and across Canada.

During his career, Richard covered a world-leading 23 Olympic Games and spent many years with Hockey Night in Canada  in addition to his other journalistic contributions. It was his treasured contribution to sport in Quebec and in Canada that led to his receipt of both the Order of Canada, and a Knighthood of the National Order of Quebec. On behalf of the Canadian Olympic Committee, and as a longtime fan and friend, I offer my most sincere condolences to his family during this difficult time.”
