Sustainability

Description

It wasn’t long after Vancouver won the rights to host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games that the organizers set the lofty goal of hosting the “greenest” Games ever. Since 1999, all host nations have been required to make environmental sustainability a priority. The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC) would have to outdo the initiatives of all previous host nations, making it an ambitious goal for organizers.

Student Outcomes

Students learn about the importance of environmental sustainability while running large-scale events, and explore the concept of sustainability through developing their own opinions of its importance and evaluating their own lifestyles.

Special Features

The Sustainability resource includes a case study on sustainability and the Olympics, case questions for students, and a teacher’s guide including case extensions to further challenge students.
