Canada's men's team pursuit racing in track cycling

Jay Lamoureux

Biography

Jay Lamoureux has been a key contributor to Canada’s rise in the men’s team pursuit. A career highlight came at the 2019 UCI Track World Championships where the team exceeded expectations by racing for the bronze medal against an experienced Danish squad, ultimately finishing fourth overall. In his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, Lamoureux was a member of the men’s team pursuit that finished fifth for Canada’s best Olympic result in the event since 1932.

In 2015, Lamoureux was diagnosed with severe patella femoral syndrome, a general overuse condition affecting his right knee. Sent home from his first senior national team training camp, he was told he had a long road to recovery. After a month without touching his bike, he had almost decided it was time to leave cycling behind to go to school and get a job. But with the belief and support of his coach and the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, he persevered through the challenge.

In 2016 he won a pair of silver medals at the Pan American Championships. A year later, he was a member of the team pursuit that won gold at the continental championships. In December 2017, he stood on his first World Cup podium as the team pursuit won silver in Milton.

In April 2018, Lamoureux competed in track and road cycling at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, winning bronze in the team pursuit. In November 2018, he stood on another World Cup podium, winning team pursuit bronze in Berlin. A silver medal followed in January 2019 in Cambridge, New Zealand. The team pursuit won gold again at the Pan American Championships in 2019.
