Reporting to the Chief Sport Officer, the Director, Games leads the COC’s overall long-term Games planning process, developing and implementing strategies and tactics that will create a winning Games environment and support optimal Team performance. This role’s key responsibilities include leading the COC’s plan, including the integration of the Olympic Performance programing, to achieve in Sport and Business objectives at each Games, supporting Games leads to ensure optimal staffing and preparation of the COC Mission team, reporting Games status and issues to COC Senior Leadership as well as contributing to the overall Sport department strategy.

Strategically, this position supports the Sport and Games Excellence core strategies by planning for and implementing best-in-class planning and operations, supporting world class preparation and contributing to the COC as a best in class NOC.

This position will be located in the COC office in Montreal, QC, at 500 René-Lévesque Boulevard West


Oversight and Accountability for Games Operations

  • Accountable for COC’s long term planning at Olympic, Olympic Winter, Pan Am, Youth Olympic, and Winter Youth Olympic Games
  • Lead coordination and integration with Olympic Performance team to ensure performance focused operational delivery at the Games.
  • Lead COC’s Games long term planning cycle from initial stages (Games-5yrs to Post games debrief), developing initial SWOT analysis, tracking gaps, escalating and resolving issues, and capitalizing on opportunities to create a winning Games environment for our Teams
  • Oversee the Games Operations Team to ensure an efficient and effective planning that meets the needs of athletes, coaches and NSFs
  • Work with Games leads to proactively identify, monitor and resolve Games related issues and NSF gaps that impact performance during Games
  • Oversee the development, review, and tracking all Games business plans and budgets to ensure financial responsibility and effective use of COC resources in all areas of Games planning
  • Ensure smooth execution of all At-Games operations, including security and emergency response, issues resolution, and Mission Team communication

Business Team Liaison and Coordination

  • Drive the COC’s Games objective setting process throughout the business and Games functional areas
  • Responsible for working with COC’s Business Team Lead and ensuring collaboration between business and sport teams
  • Manage the Senior Leadership Team Games planning reporting throughout the planning cycle, ensuring timely decision making, proper risk tracking, and issue escalation and resolution
  • Ensure appropriate internal status reports on Games preparations

Sport Department Planning

  • Work closely with Chief Sport Officer, and sport department directors on overall Sport department strategic planning and management
  • Work closely with Director, Olympic Performance and Director, System Excellence and Relations to ensure alignment and efficiencies between departments
  • Work to ensure sport department is driving cross-functional discussions and collaborating with other business units

Safety and Security

  • Accountable for the hiring, engagement and coordination of the COC’s Security Manager for Games
  • Accountable for developing all Games security plans with the COC’s security manager and the RCMP
  • Responsible for relaying security related information to Senior Leadership and Issues Management teams
  • Accountable for the implementation of the COC’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (EPRP) at Games

International Relations

  • Support Games leads in initial relationship building with local Organizing Committees, embassies, and other local partners in Games cities
  • Liaise with the IOC on Games planning and delivery issues
  • Build relationships with key National Olympic Committees to coordinate in areas of common interest and advantage
  • Audit Bid Book commitments and track delivery with Games organizing committees OCOGs 

Team Leadership

  • Develop and oversee implementation of Games department staffing plan
  • Provide coaching and support directly to Games Managers and Manager Sport Services
  • Oversee development and coaching plans delivered by managers for remaining Games staff
  • Set tone and drive culture of excellence within the Games Team
  • Lead the planning, selection, and training of COC Games Mission Team

Innovation, Evaluation and Continuous Improvement

  • Set a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within Games planning and operations
  • Work with Games leads to ensure a robust cross business debriefing process focused on improving Games operations and evaluating ROI to become more effective and efficient
  • Track innovation and evaluation outcomes being integrated into future Games planning
  • Seek to “up the ante” on a number of critical elements of COC Games operations and delivery (ROI, communication, training, evaluation)


Education and Experience

  • University Degree or College Diploma, preferably in sport management
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience

  • Travel for Games and related events including site visits, Olympic Performance Series (OPS) events, etc.
