Reporting to the Chief Sport Officer, the Director, Olympic Performance establishes the priorities, processes and framework that will support optimal team performance at the Olympic Games. The Director works with Canadian Sport System organizations to ensure a seamless integration of partner programs that support NSF teams in helping them realize their full performance potential at the Olympic Games. They create and communicate a compelling vision for an inspired & united team performance culture, to include designing strategies to foster strong engagement at COC touchpoints with NSFs and Olympic Team members (High Performance Directors, athletes, coaches, Integrated Support Team (IST) members) in how we work together to achieve ultimate outcomes; while embracing Team Canada’s performance management philosophy of whole athlete wellness.

This position will be located in the COC office in Montreal, QC, at 500 René-Lévesque Boulevard West



  • Collaborate with other leaders on the Sport team, COC departments and sport partners as required to maximize our collective value; aligned with COC strategic plans
  • Lead the Olympic Performance Management team, enabling optimum performance and engagement and alignment with the Sport team and the COC
  • Ensure operational plans, financial reporting, expenses and budgets adhere to high professional standards within the organization’s overall strategy, planning and budgetary systems

National Sport Federation (NSF) Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Establish a strong engagement with NSF High Performance Directors (HPDs) and Olympic teams in understanding their needs
  • Lead the process to identify, evaluate and prioritize gaps and opportunities; in challenging HPDs to make sure they consider all factors in building the optimal Olympic Performance Plan (OPP)

Sport Partner and Sport System Relationships and Alignment

  • Contribute to the development of sport system enhancements and increased alignment. Serve as a connector and convener. Develop, nurture, manage and sustain strong relationships
  • Engage with key sport system partners (Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), Sport Canada, Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN), other) in aligning priorities, services and resources across the sport system
  • Create a collaborative / holistic / coordinated approach working with Own The Podium (OTP) – strategically and operationally – in the delivery of efficient and streamlined Olympic and High Performance services to NSFs
  • Lead COC’s Enhanced Excellence funding program working partners (CPC, Sport Canada, OTP)

Olympic Performance Planning

  • Lead the overall NSF Games planning process to provide enhanced Olympic performance preparation strategies to ensure seamless preparation between the daily training, competition and the Olympic Games environments

NSF Team Composition Leadership and Team Dynamics

  • Lead the design of COC’s overall enhanced Team Leadership and Dynamics initiatives to ensure that Olympic teams arrive at the Games in an optimal state of organizational and team performance readiness
  • Ensure NSF internal nomination procedures and qualification systems optimize athlete / team selection and Games performance readiness

COPSIN and Olympic Integrated Support Team (IST)

  • Sport Science Sport Medicine (SSSM) alignment between Daily Training Environment (DTE) and during Games, sharing information and best practices with COPSIN Sport Performance Directors, leasing equipment for Games, establishing national medical priorities and services for Games
  • Establish overall priorities, strategies, programs and staffing for Canada’s Olympic IST (Health Team / Science Technology Team / Mental Performance Team) to ensure seamless preparation between the daily training and competition environment and the Olympic Games environment

Coaching Enhancement

  • Working in collaboration with OTP and CAC, improve sport performance by elevating the quality of Canada’s coaches by systematically improving coach education, mentorship, retention, recruitment and wellness
  • Lead initiatives designed to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the needs of athletes and coaches in the Games environment through surveys, focus groups, interviews, and other direct engagement strategies, to include the coordination of researchers

United Team Performance Culture and Mindset

  • Collaboratively lead the process to create an inspired & united team performance culture, working together as one team across the sport system; while embracing Team Canada’s performance management philosophy of whole athlete wellness
  • Design Games performance preparation key messages and identify Games environment “difference makers” through the lens of an overall strategic Olympic Performance Preparation Model/framework
  • Collaboratively lead the process of building a sense of community; with the ultimate goal being able to arrive at the next Games with the highest performance mindset possible

Sport Community Engagement, Collaboration and Communication

  • Lead the design of strategies to foster strong engagement with NSFs and Olympic Team members (HPDs, athletes, coaches, IST members) in their Olympic performance preparation and touchpoints with the COC
  • Strategize how to create environments for people to share, reflect, and support each other, in building relationships, trust and empathy among people, breaking down silos and expanding networks for true collaboration
  • Collaboratively lead the process to create a national strategy to share knowledge systematically, energetically, and quickly through the formation of memberships in thematic / or peer groups that connect people together to solve problems, drive strategy, transfer best practices, develop professional skills, and create new ideas and innovations

At-Games Role

  • Lead all aspects of Olympic Team Performance management services, spaces and people (targeted and non-targeted sports) in the implementation of their at-Games Olympic Performance plans (athlete and support team lounges Health Services, Mental Performance and Science and Technology)
  • Support the activities of the Games Delivery team in all aspects related to creating a winning Games environment that supports optimal team performances

Foster and develop relations within our Canadian Sport community and establish strong professional relationships with the following groups and individuals;

  • National Sport Federations, HPDs or Team Leaders, and CEOs
  • OTP Directors and High-Performance Advisors
  • Sport Canada, CAC, COPSIN, CPC, Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES)
  • NSF nominated coaches, IST Leads, and Mental Performance Consultants
  • Olympic Games and other event Organizing Committees
  • Other National Olympic Committees


Education and Experience

  • Previous multiple (2 or more) Olympic Games experience in a performance oriented role required
  • Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience working in high performance sport contexts, 5 years of progressive experience within a National Sport Federation or Multi-Sport organization
  • Experience as an Athlete Olympian, Olympic Coach or Performance Director is required
  • Bilingualism (English, French) required
  • Post-Secondary University degree required
  • Advanced university degree (such as a master’s or doctor’s degree) or other equivalent program experience or training is an asset

Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity and proven ability to build/maintain relationships with the national sport community, multi-sport organizations, governments and provincial agencies and other diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to contribute to a strong team environment including a willingness and capacity to operate effectively with a diverse group of individuals and personalities
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience leading/managing teams and delivering change through using innovative techniques
  • Capacity to be aware of, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically
