Manager, Finance & Accounting

We are the largest private supporter of high performance sport in Canada and we are responsible for all aspects of Canada’s involvement in the Olympic Movement, including participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games.

The Manager Finance and Accounting implements and manages the financial and accounting aspects of the strategic plan, annual operating budget and management reporting for the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and the Canadian Olympic Foundation (COF). Based in Toronto and reporting to the Senior Manager, Finance, the incumbent is responsible for leading the operational and daily functions of the Finance team and support the Controllership of the organization, preparation of the monthly reporting package, general ledger management, and preparation of audited financial statement working papers. The individual must be a hands-on leader to a team of three, able to multi-task and manage several priorities to tight deadlines. Familiar with the latest standards for Canadian charities and/or RCAAA’s, the ideal candidate will also be responsible for grant reporting to funding partners. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to demonstrate adaptability and initiative are key for this role.


Accounting and Finance

  • General Ledger oversight and control
  • Insurance analysis and administration
  • Payroll and benefits administration
  • Cash flow management and banking
  • Expense management


  • Responsible for ensuring that all accounting entries relevant to the functions noted above are recorded accurately and in accordance with the applicable accounting standards
  • Support the preparation of the monthly/periodic and year-end financial management reports comparing actuals against the approved budget, and explanation of related variance analysis
  • Preparation and review of the financial statements working paper for year-end Financial Statements audit
  • Preparation and reporting of the audited financial report to funders (International Olympic Committee – IOC)
  • Preparation and coordination of the year-end annual audit including support to external auditors
  • Responsible for review of external financial reporting to regulatory bodies, including charitable returns in all jurisdictions and to funders
  • Review of relevant Canadian and provincial statutory reporting
  • Review of HST/QST and other tax returns
  • Support the Business and Financial Planning Team in the preparation of annual budget and forecasting
  • Support the implementation of financial systems (ERP), and contribute to its ongoing improvement and maintenance

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Preparation of all relevant payroll documentation and compliance reporting required by the federal and provincial jurisdictions, as well as COC policies and procedures
  • Review and approval of all payroll input data from the third-party payroll service in Canada, as well as applicable journal entries
  • Preparation and review of the EHT annual return
  • Ensuring that all confidential information is securely maintained, and that proper filing and record-keeping is in place
  • Supervision of a Coordinator, Financial Services to ensure accurate and timely preparation of all payroll services through to preparation of T-4s and other statements of earnings
  • Coordinate with Human Resources to ensure their reporting needs are met
  • Maintain and track an annual financial payroll budget and forecast
  • Maintenance and filing of employee benefits program

Investment Accounting

  • Preparation of the annual investment working papers
  • Responsible for coordination of the investment accounting function including liaising with external fund administrators to ensure compliance with COC’s reporting needs
  • Ensure financial reporting is completed within tight year-end deadlines
  • Provide improvement recommendations to the reporting process and bring any concerns or opportunities to the attention of the Senior Manager


  • Administer the multi-faceted insurance requirement including Games-specific policies
  • Ensure compliance with COC needs and identify gaps or concerns
  • Manage the key relationships with our insurance brokers and insurance companies
  • Make recommendations in the best overall interest of the COC and its Sport partners

Managerial Functions

  • Direct supervision of two Financial Services Coordinators and one Financial Services Assistant, including annual goal setting, annual personal development plans, reviews, and assignment of work
  • Plans, assigns and manages the work of two three staff


Education and Experience

  • Qualified CPA with familiarity in not-for-profit accounting
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience; including 2 years of managerial experience in an Accounting Department
  • Familiarity with Canadian labour legislation and payroll regulations in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia
  • Advanced knowledge of Payroll systems (ADP preferred), Microsoft Office Suite, and Financial software
  • Prior experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP), SAP B1 preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Managerial skills with the ability to motivate, mentor and develop a team including objective setting and performance reviews
  • Excellent proactive communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to convey complex financial information succinctly
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with budgeting and management reporting
  • Ability to prepare accurate and timely financial reports and communicate to funders and other stakeholders
  • Time-management and organizational skills essential with a view to developing effective and efficient work processes
  • Experience in ERP implementation and knowledge of the associated risks
