F.J. Halbhaus
At the Festival of the Empire celebrating the coronation of King George V held at Crystal Palace in London, England in 1911, Canadian Frances Joseph “F.J.” Halbhaus won the sprint double (100y, 200y). Canada went on to win the games with the lowest score of eight points across numerous sports, having topped the podium in three of the five events. The team was awarded the Inter-Empire trophy by Lord Lonsdale. Halbhaus’ career personal bests were set in 1911 (100y – 10.0 yards, 200 yards – 22.1, 400 yards – 50.3).
Born to his parents Paul and Margaret, Halbhaus attended the University of Toronto where he ran on the varsity track team.
Halbhaus was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1977.
