Biography

Yunjia Zhang began competing internationally for Canada in November 2022 when she entered her first FIE Junior World Cup event at age 15. In April 2023, she won the bronze medal in women’s individual foil at the FIE World Junior Championships. That summer, she competed at her first Pan American Championships where she helped Canada in the gold medal in women’s team foil. She debuted at the senior FIE World Championships in July 2023.

In 2024, Zhang again stood on a world championship podium, this time with a bronze medal at the cadet level for women’s individual foil at the FIE World Junior Championships.  

A Little More About Yunjia

Getting into the Sport: Started fencing at age 9 because both of her parents are fencing coaches… Inspired by her mother, who she calls the “épée god”… Outside Interests: Enjoys snowboarding… Odds and Ends: Moved to Toronto from Shanghai at age 12… Always travels with a toy piggy… Favourite motto: “I will be okay”… Coached by her father Jie Zhang…
