COC's Lisa Wallace Receives OPHEA Young Professional Award
Nomination Comes as Olympic School Program’s New Curriculum Goes Live
Yesterday evening, the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Lisa Wallace received the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association’s Outstanding Young Professional Award. Wallace is manager of the Canadian Olympic School Program (COSP), presented by RBC, recognized internationally for its cutting-edge curriculum.
The OYP Award is presented each year to someone working in the health and education sector who in five years or less has made a notable contribution to the advancement of active, healthy living for children and youth.
“I am very excited and humbled by this recognition,” said Wallace. “What’s most exciting is that I truly feel that it speaks to the value and perceived quality of the new Canadian Olympic School Program content we have just developed.”
COSP, which has provided annual curriculum to Canadian educators since 2004, is launching its most ambitious year yet. In 2010-11, students are inspired to exercise their mind, body and character through values-based “Olympian Stories” involving Canadian stars such as Alex Bilodeau and Joannie Rochette, as well as through “Canadian Olympic Movement Skills”.
The latter is a new development set to help students with physical literacy. They will be inspired to move like Olympians through certain movement and sport skill activities. The activities, created in tandem with PHE Canada, follow the long-term athlete model adopted by Sport Canada and the Canadian Sport System.
COSP has also received praise from the International Olympic Committee’s head of education, Anne Chevalley. Within the next few months, the program will be among a special group of featured Olympic education resources showcased by the IOC for December’s World Forum for Education and Sport.
“Under Lisa’s guidance, the COC is a true international leader in the area of Olympic education,” said Jean R. Dupré, COC Chief Executive Officer. “The school program is one of our most vital grassroots programs, engaging students early in Olympic values and the love of sport.”
