Canadian Olympic Team Saddened by the Rochette Family’s Loss
The Canadian Olympic community and the figure skating family were saddened this morning to learn of the death of Thérèse Rochette, the mother of figure skater Joannie Rochette. Mrs. Rochette, died last night at Vancouver General Hospital. She was just 55 years of age. The Rochette family had just arrived in Vancouver yesterday from Montreal. Joannie’s father Normand came to the Olympic Village early this morning and gave Joannie the sad news along with her long-time coach Manon Perron.
Our sincere condolences go out to the Rochette family, and our thoughts and prayers are with Joannie at this time. She is currently with her father and close family friends who have travelled from Île Dupas and area to be here for the Games. The other members of the Canadian figure skating team here have all been informed by their coaches and team leaders of the sad news. Joannie is with her father at this time, but she has decided to compete through the Games. We support her in her decision and will help her prepare during this sad time.
We appreciate your understanding that we do have other athletes competing today, and ask that you respect their need to focus on their competition.
