Canadians to catch today

When the Canadian Olympic Team walks into the stadium later today at the Opening Ceremonies, they will be following a true leader and patriot in Simon Whitfield.

“I am honoured, as I have spent my life caring about the Olympic team,” said the 37-year-old triathlete and two-time Olympic medallist from Victoria, B.C.

When Whitfield first got the news he would carry Canada’s flag he went for a run along a familiar route in Victoria to the Terry Fox statue – a figure that represents the true dedication and work each member of this 277 Canadian Olympic team gives every day.

The Ceremony, titled “Isles of Wonder“ will be inspired by playwright William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. It promises to a grand spectacle.

More than one billion people worldwide are expected to watch it on television. It will include live farm animals, glimpses into British history and Beatle Sir Paul McCartney will close the show.
