Cochrane steps up for silver

In his best-ever time, Victoria B.C.’s Ryan Cochrane held on late to push through the last 50 metres of the 1,500m freestyle final Saturday night for a silver medal and a new Canadian record. His performance marked the third podium of the day for Canada in a time of 14:39.63 and brought the country’s medal count to 10.

After earning bronze in Beijing, Cochrane said the silver is a sweet redemption.

The medal is the swimming team’s second of the Games after Brent Hayden took bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Also in the pool Saturday, the men’s 4X100m medlay relay team swam to eighth place in the final. Charles Francis, Scott Dickens, Joe Bartoch and Brent Hayden swam to a 3:34.19 finish.
