Canadians to Catch Day 13
Women’s soccer team
At 8 a.m. EST Thursday, the Canadian women will kick-off against France to battle for the bronze medal. This match marks program’s first-ever opportunity for an Olympic medal in the sport. On Monday night, captain Christine Sinclair netted a hat-trick in a dramatic 4-3 semifinal overtime loss. “It is not a friendly game so we will do whatever it takes on the day to secure a win,” says head coach John Herdman, “[the women] have come to see the flag rise”.
Tonya Verbeek
Two-time Olympic medallist Tonya Verbeek of Thorold, Ont., will be looking for her third Olympic podium today in the 55kg freestyle competition. Also on the mats today will be teammate Leah Callahan (Mackenzie, BC) in her Olympic debut competing in the 72kg competition. Both women start their qualification matches at 8am EST and join Wednesday’s Canadian medallist Carol Huynh on the podium.
Rhythmic Gymnastics
For the first time since its debut in the ’96 Olympic Games, Canada has a team competing in the rhythmic gymnastics group event. The team will perform two routines, beginning at 9:50am EST.
Synchronized Swimming
Wednesday at 10am EST, the Synchronized Swimming team will take to the pool in its technical routine. Performing a sports-themed routine, the group will be looking to position well before Friday’s free routine.
