Olympic champion Kevin Martin announces retirement
Olympic champion Kevin Martin has retired from competitive curling and will pursue a career in broadcasting, according to reports.
Martin skipped Canada to men’s curling gold in its home Games at Vancouver 2010. His rink consisting of John Morris, Marc Kennedy, Ben Hebert and Adam Enright went undefeated to take the Olympic title.
It was his third appearance in the Olympics and second medal. He had earlier led his country to a silver medal at Salt Lake City 2002. The Albertan also represented Canada in Albertville 1992, though curling was a demonstration sport then.
The Canadian Press has reported Martin will assume a role as a TV curling analyst. The report quoted a Martin statement that read:
“It has been an amazing run. I am closing the chapter on my playing career in the sport of curling that has been so good to me.
“I can’t wait for what lies ahead in my new role with Sportsnet as we work together to elevate the sport to new heights, inspiring our curling youth.”
