Nettey wins her first Diamond League meet in New York
Long jumper Christabel Nettey of Brampton, Ontario fought off headwinds and strong competition to win her first IAAF Diamond League meet on Saturday in New York at the 2015 adidas Grand Prix.
Nettey improved on every one of her five jumps finishing with a winning distance and meet record of 6.92 metres at the Randall’s Island venue east of Manhattan. When American Tianna Bartoletta couldn’t get farther than 6.89 on her sixth and final attempt, it sealed the victory for Nettey and made her last jump unnecessary.
Watch Nettey beat her competitors in New York:
Nettey – the Canadian record holder – has been consistently top three in all of her Diamond League appearances. She started the season in Doha jumping 6.93 for third, improved to second in Eugene with a 6.99 for the national record before taking first prize in New York.
Bartoletta had won in Doha (6.99) and Eugene (7.11 wind-assisted) and leads the overall Diamond Race with 10 points. Nettey follows with seven and Shara Proctor of Great Britain – who was third in New York with 6.72 – has five points this season.
The Nettey-Bartoletta rivalry is worth following all the way to the IAAF World Championships in Beijing this August, the two North Americans are the most in-form women’s long jumpers on the planet at the moment.
