Five for fencing – Canada nominates more athletes to Rio 2016

Canada will send its fencing contingent of five to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as announced on Tuesday in Montreal.

The Canadian Fencing Federation has nominated Maxime Brinck-Croteau, Eleanor Harvey, Leonora Mackinnon, Joseph Polossifakis, Maximilien Van Haaster.

Harvey was a member of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games squad that won women’s team foil gold last summer. Harvey will compete in the individual foil at her first Olympic Games, as will Mackinnon, in the épée.

Male fencers – all making their Olympic debut – will be led by double TO2015 medallist Polossifakis in the sabre, while Brinck-Croteau will compete in the épée and Van Haaster in foil.

Fencing is the latest sport to nominate athletes to Team Canada after Swimming, ShootingTaekwondo and synchro.

At Rio 2016, Canada will be looking for its first-ever Olympic medal.
