In honor of Truth and Reconciliation Week, we are excited to introduce a new addition to the Indigenous Legacies through Sport Series featuring the incredible Olympian and CBC Host Waneek Horn-Miller!
This resource highlights Waneek’s inspiring journey through sport, emphasizing her career transitions and the diverse career opportunities within the world of sports. Students will be challenged to explore and reflect on the many career paths that sport can offer.
The complete Indigenous Legacies through Sport Series also features stories from Indigenous Team Canada Olympians Jesse Cockney, Jillian Weir, Liam Gill, and Alexandria Loutit.

Special features
Athlete stories are accessible at two different reading levels, catering to Kindergarten to Grade 3 and Grade 4 to 6 students. Each story is accompanied by discussion questions and engaging learning activities that educators can seamlessly incorporate into their curriculum, covering areas such as social-emotional learning, visual arts, and physical and health education.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Develop critical thinking skills and use their knowledge and guiding principles to inform their thoughts and actions.
- Gain a concrete understanding of Indigenous perspectives on the relationship with the planet.
- Comprehend the significance of kindness and its positive impact on their relationships with others, fostering empathy, and cooperation.
- Define resilience, draw connections between resilience in Indigenous sports and everyday life, and identify and describe at least one traditional Indigenous sport.
