Indigenous Legacies through Sport Series

Lesson description

In honour of Truth and Reconciliation Week, we are proud to feature two distinct Indigenous Team Canada Olympians, Alexandria Loutitt and Liam Gill, in our the Indigenous Legacies through Sport Series. Through their personal growth and achievements, they have brought Indigenous voices to the forefront.

Students will explore the themes of kindness and resilience, making links between their world, curriculum and stories.

The complete Indigenous Legacies through Sport Series also features Indigenous Team Canada Olympians Jesse Cockney and Jillian Weir. Their complete stories are available below.

The Canadian Olympic Foundation is recognizing Indigenous athletes and their contributions to their communities through the 2023 Bitove Indigenous Awards.

Each year, five Indigenous athletes are awarded $5,000 each to help with the financial costs of training and competing or to support athlete-led, community-based initiatives.

Through the Team Canada Impact Agenda, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Olympic Foundation are committed to making sport safe, inclusive and barrier-free so more young people can play and stay in sport. These awards are part of that commitment, recognizing the need to lead a more diverse and inclusive Team Canada to podium success.
