COC partners with Canada Games

TORONTO (August 5, 2022) – On Friday, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announced a partnership with the Canada Games Council, including a $250,000 commitment to support the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games and its role as part of the athlete journey.

This partnership is an extension of the COC’s mission to transform Canada through the power of sport.

“While many Canada Games alumni have gone on to become Olympians and household names, this partnership is about more than just promoting athletic success,” said David Shoemaker, CEO and Secretary General of the Canadian Olympic Committee. “It’s about sharing our Olympic values with young athletes from across the country, and strengthening a Canadian sport system that is safe, inclusive and barrier-free.”

The partnership and the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ontario kick off tonight with the Canada Games Hall of Honour induction ceremony. Two Olympians will be a part of the 2022 class – Michael Strange (boxing) and Steve Nash (basketball).

“Canadian Olympians inspire the next generation of young athletes to chase their dreams, much like the Canada Games spark greatness in future athletes and leaders on and off the field of play,” said Kelly-Ann Paul, President and CEO of the Canada Games Council. “The Canada Games are an important milestone along the development pathway for many high performance athletes, coaches and officials aspiring to represent Canada at the highest levels in sport. We are grateful for the support of the COC to further empower Canada Games participants to pursue excellence.”

The Canada Games bring together able-bodied athletes and athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities for the largest amateur multi-sport event in the country. Alternating between winter and summer, they span over 30 different sports to showcase the very best in Canadian sport and spirit.

The 2022 edition takes place in Ontario’s Niagara region from August 6 – August 21 and will feature more than 5,000 athletes and coaches competing in 18 sports.
