MARCEL AUBUT WINS PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL SPORT COUNCIL SEAT
First ballot victory gives Aubut highest endorsement from Pan American countries

TORONTO – In a hotly contested election held today in Bangkok, Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut was elected in an overwhelming fashion by the Pan American Sport Organization (PASO) to represent Canada and PASO as a member of the Executive Council for the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) which is comprised of all 204 National Olympic Committees from around the world.

Garnering the highest number of votes amongst all candidates, Aubut was elected to one of the most high-profile positions held by a Canadian in international sport today.

“This is a fantastic achievement for our President, whose presence on this ANOC Executive Council will be of great benefit to PASO, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada,” said Chris Overholt, CEO and Secretary General, COC. “We look forward to seeing Marcel make great contributions to this important organization on behalf of athletes, coaches, and all Canadians as we head into the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games in Toronto, and the Year of Sport.”

“It is an honour to represent PASO and Canada internationally in this capacity,” said Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee. “I was touched by the clear confidence of the voters and I look forward to working with my fellow council members to support our ANOC President, His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah of Kuwait, and his vision. I will ensure that the voices of all the Pan Am countries are heard on this Executive Council.”

Since being elected in 2012, Sheikh Ahmad has introduced a strong new vision for ANOC, which is to protect and advance the collective interests of all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in their mission to promote the values of the Olympic Movement and create role models for youth.

“I feel privileged and I look forward to being part of this exciting opportunity and working with all of our international partners to further sport within the ANOC community,” said Aubut. “This is an exciting time for sport, for Canada, and for the Americas.”
