Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 1
SANTIAGO, CHILE (October 21, 2023) – Team Canada brings home its first medals of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
TEAM CANADA’S MEDAL COUNT:
GOLD: 4 | SILVER: 2 | BRONZE: 3 | TOTAL: 9
SCHEDULE/RESULTS: Day 1 Results and Day 2 Schedule
DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Cycling – Mountain bike
- Gunnar Holmgren (Orilla, Ont.) was Team Canada’s first Santiago 2023 medallist.
- Holmgren and Jennifer Jackson (Barrie, Ont.) captured gold in the men’s and women’s cross country events.
- Diving: Caeli McKay (Calgary, Alta.) won bronze in the women’s 10m platform. Caeli secured Canada an Olympic quota spot in the event for Paris 2024 earlier this year during the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
- Gymnastics: The Canadian men’s artistic gymnastics team won silver. The following athletes qualified for individual events:
- William Emard (Laval, Que.): All-around, rings, horizontal bar
- Felix Dolci (Laval, Que.): All-around, floor, rings, vault
- René Cournoyer (Repentigny, Que.): Floor, rings, horizontal bar
- Jayson Rampersad (Oakville, Ont.): Pommel horse
- Zachary Clay (Chilliwack, B.C.): Pommel horse, rings
- Swimming:
- Rachel Nicol (Lethbridge, Alta.) and Sophie Angus (Weston, Connecticut) both sat atop the podium for Canada in the women’s 100m breaststroke with gold and silver, respectively. This is the third Pan Am medal for Nicol who won bronze in the same event and silver in the 4x100m medley relay on home soil at Toronto 2015.
- Team Canada won gold in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay and bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
- Taekwondo:
- Tae-Ku Park (Winnipeg, Man.) earned bronze in the 68kg category. He’s competing at Santiago 2023 along with his two siblings Sklyar and Braven. All three are coached by their father,Jae, and their mother was born in Chile.
