Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 10
SANTIAGO, CHILE (October 30, 2023) – Team Canada added two gold, two silver and three bronze to its medal total on Day 10 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

- Judo
- Shady El Nahas (Toronto, Ont.) took gold in the men’s 100kg judo class in his Pan Am Games debut at Santiago 2023.
- Fencing
- Dylan French (Richmond, B.C.) was the first Canadian ever to be crowned Pan Am Games champion in the men’s individual épée. The last Canadian to win gold in any individual fencing event at the Pan Am Games was Philippe Beaudry at Guadalajara 2011 in the men’s sabre.
- Two Canadians captured medals in the women’s individual foil – Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, Ont.) won the silver medal while Jessica Guo (Toronto, Ont.) secured bronze.
- Harvey and Guo were both members of the Tokyo 2020 team that finished fifth for Canada’s best-ever Olympic result in women’s team foil.

- Surfing
- Sanoa Dempfle-Olin (Tofino, B.C.) won silver in the women’s shortboard. Along the way to her medal, she secured her spot for Paris 2024 when she advanced to the gold medal final. Dempfle-Olin qualified as the top-ranked surfer at Pan Ams who was not already qualified for the Olympic Games. The spot is provisional on her participation in the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games.
- Finn Spencer (Paia, Maui) captured Canada’s first medal of the day, a bronze in the men’s SUP surfing event.
- Sanoa Dempfle-Olin (Tofino, B.C.) won silver in the women’s shortboard. Along the way to her medal, she secured her spot for Paris 2024 when she advanced to the gold medal final. Dempfle-Olin qualified as the top-ranked surfer at Pan Ams who was not already qualified for the Olympic Games. The spot is provisional on her participation in the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games.
- Table Tennis
- Eugene Wang (Aurora, Ont.) and Mo Zhang (Vancouver, B.C.) won bronze in mixed doubles. Santiago 2023 marked Zhang’s fifth Pan Am Games appearance and Wang’s third.
