Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 2
SANTIAGO, CHILE (October 22, 2023) – Team Canada added five gold, four silver and three bronze to its medal total on Day 2 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Cycling – BMX:
- Molly Simpson (Red Deer, Alta.) won silver in women’s BMX racing to earn Canada’s third cycling medal so far at Santiago 2023.
- Diving:
- Canada added three more diving medals to its tally. In the men’s synchronized 10m platform, Rylan Wiens (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Nathan Zsombor-Murray (Pointe-Claire, Que.) won silver.
- In the women’s 1m springboard, Pamela Ware (Greenfield Park, Que.) won gold while Mia Vallée (Kirkland, Que.) won silver.
- Canada added three more diving medals to its tally. In the men’s synchronized 10m platform, Rylan Wiens (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Nathan Zsombor-Murray (Pointe-Claire, Que.) won silver.
- Gymnastics – Artistic:
- In artistic gymnastics, the Canadian women won bronze in the team event. Canada has secured a spot for Paris 2024 by capturing bronze in the event at the 2022 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool, England.
- The following athletes qualified for individual events:
– Ava Stewart (Bowmanville, Ont.) – all-around, uneven bars, balance beam
– Sydney Turner (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) – floor exercise
– Aurélie Tran (Repentigny, Que.) – all-around, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise
- In artistic gymnastics, the Canadian women won bronze in the team event. Canada has secured a spot for Paris 2024 by capturing bronze in the event at the 2022 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Liverpool, England.
- Skateboard:
- Canada won its first ever Pan Am Games medal in the sport courtesy of Fay De Fazio Ebert (Toronto, Ont.). De Fazio Ebert was crowned Pan American Games champion in the women’s park event. At just 13 years old, she is the youngest Team Canada athlete competing at Santiago 2023.
- Sport Climbing:
- Canada is looking to win its first-ever medal in sport climbing in the sport’s Pan American Games debut at Santiago 2023.
- Brothers Oscar Baudrand (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Victor Baudrand (Montreal, Que.) and Sean McColl (Vancouver, B.C.) will have the opportunity not only to accomplish that, but also to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the boulder & lead combined event tomorrow (Day 3). The gold medallist in the event will punch their ticket to the Olympic Games.
- Canada is looking to win its first-ever medal in sport climbing in the sport’s Pan American Games debut at Santiago 2023.
- Swimming:
- Mary-Sophie Harvey (Trois-Rivières, Que.) became the first Team Canada athlete to win multiple medals at Santiago 2023 with her second gold medal, this time in the women’s 200m freestyle. She ended Day 2 with her third medal of Santiago 2023, a bronze, as a member of the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team.
- Maggie Mac Neil (London, Ont.) broke the Pan Am Games record in the 100m butterfly, winning gold with a time of 56.94 seconds. The previous record of 57.24 was held by American Kelsi Worrell (Toronto 2015). The medal was Mac Neil’s second gold of Santiago 2023 (women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, Day 1). Her third medal of the Games, a bronze, came as part of the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team event.
- Hugh McNeill (Langley, B.C.) captured bronze in the men’s 200m backstroke.
- Mary-Sophie Harvey (Trois-Rivières, Que.) became the first Team Canada athlete to win multiple medals at Santiago 2023 with her second gold medal, this time in the women’s 200m freestyle. She ended Day 2 with her third medal of Santiago 2023, a bronze, as a member of the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team.
- Taekwondo:
- Skylar Park (Winnipeg, Man.) won gold in the women’s 57kg category the night after her younger brother Tae-Ku claimed bronze (68kg). It is her second Pan Am Games medal (silver, Lima 2019).
- Weightlifting:
- Maude Charron (Rimouski, Que) won silver in the women’s 59kg category, her first Pan Am Games medal. At Lima 2019, she just missed the podium in fourth place.
