Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 9

SANTIAGO, CHILE (October 28, 2023) – Team Canada added one gold, four silver and five bronze to its medal total on Day 9 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

TEAM CANADA’S MEDAL COUNT: 

GOLD: 33 | SILVER: 30 | BRONZE: 35 | TOTAL: 98

SCHEDULE/RESULTS: Day 9 Results and Day 10 Schedule

  • Canoe/Kayak Slalom
    • Lois Betteridge (Ottawa, Ont.) won silver in both the women’s C-1 and women’s kayak cross. Previously, Betteridge won silver in the women’s C-1 in her Pan Am Games debut at Lima 2019. 
    • Siblings Alex and Léa Baldoni (Pau, France) both secured medals on Day 9 – Alex captured silver in the men’s kayak cross while Léa secured bronze in the women’s K-1. Santiago 2023 is the first major-Games for the pair.
    • Maël Rivard (Ottawa, Ont.) won bronze in the men’s K-1 event.
    • Kayak cross will make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.
  • Equestrian – Eventing
    • Canada topped the podium in the team event, moving up from third place after the first two days of competition in dressage and cross-country with their show jumping performances on Sunday. With that gold medal finish, they qualified Canada a full eventing team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. 
    • Lindsay Traisnel (Maidstone, Ont.) took bronze in the individual eventing competition.
  • Judo
    • Three judokas secured medals in their respective weight class today:
      • Isabelle Harris (Abbotsford, B.C.) – silver, women’s 63kg
      • Antoine Bouchard (Jonquière, Que.) – bronze, men’s 73kg 
      • David Popovici (Montreal, Que.) – bronze, men’s 81kg
    • This is Bouchard’s second Pan Am Games medal. He previously won a silver medal on home soil at Toronto 2015 and would go on to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games where he finished fifth in his weight class.
    • Santiago 2023 marks the Pan Am Games debut of both Harris and Popovici.
