Seven archers en route to Lima for the 2019 Pan American Games

OTTAWA (June 19, 2019) – Archery Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee have announced that seven archers, six in the recurve discipline and one in compound, have been nominated to represent Canada at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

Earlier this year, the Canadian team was able to qualify a full contingent of three men and three women to compete in the recurve division. The sole compound spot was secured in 2018. This will be compound archery’s debut at the Pan American Games.

Led by three-time Olympian and world championship medallist Crispin Duenas, the team brings a wealth of international experience. The Games also provide a development opportunity for up-and-coming archers. The archers will look to continue building off their strong performance from the 2019 World Championships, where Eric Peters shot both a competition and personal best of 683 out of 720.

“Our men will enter the Pan American Games coming off a very solid performance at the World Championships, where they were clearly the top performing team in the Americas,” said National Coach Shawn Riggs. “Our women will be looking to demonstrate the same level of success they had at the World Ranking event in Chile, but this time against a much deeper field. Our team is well prepared to challenge for the Olympic spots that will be on the line in Lima.”

The Canadian recurve team will have a chance to qualify as a mixed team in Lima, which would see Canada earn one men’s spot and one women’s spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Additionally, the top man and woman at Lima 2019 will earn Olympic quota places.

Archery will take place in the second half of the Pan American Games from August 7 to 11 at the Andrés Avelino Cáceres Sports Center, Villa María del Triunfo.
